Well I also don't remember this kind of panic and action from China during SARS which supposedly had far higher mortality rate once infected. Coronavirus supposedly has 3% mortality rate and they're panicking and quarantining 56 million people and 18 cities? China is building 2 new hospitals for cornavirus patients in a week. Does this sound normal to you. I don't remember China doing any of this during the outbreak of SARS which had far higher mortality rate. SARS mortality rate was supposedly like 15%. That's insanely high. Yet China is doing all this for virus with 3% mortality rate?

Hong Kong is supposedly closing schools for 2 weeks. That's pretty extreme for potential virus. US and Russia is flying in emergency evacuation planes to Wuhan this weekend to get its citizens out. Again, that sounds extreme and I don't remember any country doing that for SARS which was supposedly far deadlier. China, US, Russia governments knows something they're not telling us. The type of actions being taken by these governments don't seem right for 3% mortality rate virus.
I agree that there is something they aren't telling us because I agree that the infection rate is likely much worse than they say. Also, SARS didn't spread from person to person as easily as this seems to do. That's likely a big reason why the responses are so different. Also, they lived and learned from SARS and know it could've been a lot worse. They prepared for it to be a lot worse and, thus, we see the response they prepared for now. I DON'T agree that it's a sign that it was some escaped experiment from the Wuhan labs.

Snopes suggests the evidence to support this as an actual thing is lacking.. fortunately.
SerpentZA and C-Milk (formerly Western expat vloggers who lived in China) seemed to suggest that they have a lot of similarly crazy dietary ideas due to "Traditional Chinese Medicine." Their live stream with "insider info" yesterday was very enlightening:

After sleeping on it, I think I need some protection for my portfolio. I'm buying puts on China first thing Monday morning. This China coronavirus is way more serious than I initially thought and world governments are hiding info and lying about the number of infected and the mortality rate.

SARS outbreak happened in 2003 or 17 years ago before smartphones and social media. So Chinese government was able to hide it. Can't do that today with everyone having smartphones with cameras and internet. The incubation period for cornoavirus is supposed to be 14 days. I started this thread on Monday or about 6-7 days ago when couple cases started making the news. I didn't think it was a huge deal but possible potential news and something to keep an eye on. But the narrative is changing rapidly as we get more news from the people in the actual inflected zone areas. Based on the 14 days incubation period report, this thing should really start blowing up towards end of next week and the following week. Since I'm far away from the hot zone, I'm more concerned about the possible negative financial impact this will have on me more than my health risk. I've pretty much ruled out any travel near term and will stay put at home.

I don't believe the government 3-4% morality rate for the coronavirus. That's BS given the level of government panic and response. I think this coronavirus actual mortality rate is higher than even SARS. It's the only explanation that makes sense to me.

I think this says it all...their president wouldn't go public with the seriousness of it if it weren't all that serious...

Dang, that dude's a straight-up hero!

Humm, read the original Chinese article and it didn't say he was working. He was retired and checked into the hospital. He had arithmia so that probably didn't help his chances.

I'll be concerned if the US cases start spreading, and even then only about as concerned as the flu unless something changes on the official mortality rate. People have an unhealthy obsession with minuscule risks and overblown crap these days precipitated by ubiquitous cell phone use and "fake news" that our brains cannot seem to filter out anymore.

I don't see any issue with how China is handling this, they are handling it like only China can. I think the last thing China wants geopolitically right now is to be the source of a major new disease outbreak that causes the rest of the world to view China in a more negative light. They most likely see themselves with an advantage in stability over the US at the moment and don't want to lose it. So take the SARS experience and jump on this one with both feet.

The more I read about this coronavirus, the more freaked out I'm becoming this will cause global recession. Last time because of SARS outbreak, Hong Kong went into recession. SARS lasted around 9-13 months but wasn't as severe because SARS only transmitted from people who showed severe symptoms. So SARS was relatively easy to spot and contain since the sick was quarantined at hospitals. SARS had 13-15% official mortality rate but many think that figure was extremely low because of the fake mortality rates China provided to the world. Outside of China, SARS mortality rate was around 30%. I trust rest of the world mortality rate for SARS over bogus China government stats. So if we assume 30% mortality rate for highly contagious coronavirus, this could potentially send the world into a recession.

The thing that scares me about coronavirus is it currently has no cure. And unlike SARS, it's highly infectious even during the incubation period and people can easily spread it to other people while showing zero symptoms. So there's no way to avoid it unlike SARS. And if you get the coronavirus and manage to survive, your lungs will be permanently damaged and you'll still be fucked for rest of your life with respiratory problems. This is some nasty shit.

Actions taken by China so far tells me this is far more serious than feared, and I shouldn't trust anything they say. I should only watch and monitor what they're doing and not what they're saying. And what they're doing is starting to scare the bejesus out of me.

Where did you hear it was infectious during the incubation period? Hopefully it is just someone's runaway assumption. That was still the question last I checked.

I mean at a certain point - once things reach... say... 200 cases in the US.... I would think i'ts pretty obvious you're not going to successfully quarantine this, no?

I’m no expert but I cannot imagine how a quarantine would be effective in the modern world. We all travel and interact with far too many people on a daily basis.
If we went into the grim possibilities I could imagine a virus that let’s say takes 2 weeks to recover from maybe you are contagious for 3-4 weeks total. Let’s also say the virus is very deadly Black Plague type deadly.
I could see a huge quarantine working as in everyone stay in your home for 4 weeks food and supplies will be dropped off at you home or Street.
Use this app to notify if someone died and needs to be picked up.
Not a full solution but I’m sure that would greatly slow the spread.
