The video I saw last night on the news makes it look pretty serious.
The news loves a bit of health pandemic drama, they do it every year.

All those Chinese wearing masks.

Thats standard over there. Anyone with a cold, flu or sniffle wears one. I'm not sure if I find if endearing or a bit gross. its certainly nothing to to with the level of seriousness of this.

The temperature screenings.
I mean you could get past them with a couple of paracetamol.

I expect all air travel from Wuhan to be stopped, period. Haven't seen today's news yet, but posts here suggest that the sense of imminent problems is not dissipating.
Theres always a lot of hysteria over things like this. I'm a lot less worried about this than any seasonal flu and I'm willing to bet that less people die from it but a much bigger fuss is made.

I will say that the mask thing is very common over there, if the Chinese students I see on the campus I work at are any indication. I wouldn't be surprised if 75%+ of them are wearing a mask outside right now out of an abundance of caution. The temp screenings is the same thing, this is the appropriate actions to halt this outbreak.

I live near S.F. If we went under quarantine here, I'd live. I'd be fine. In fact I have food for months here, running water, electricity. I could conceivably hole up for a long time. Cabin fever? I'd probably not go crazy from that.
How do you think it would go if the Government put SF under quarantine because there was a flu outbreak?

I would predict massive riots and a death toll that would put any disease in modern history in the shade.

We're not that crazy here, believe it or not. There would not be deadly riots.

Ummm. People are getting pretty worked up about vaccinations. Forced quarantine, suspension of freedom of movement, forced medical treatment, imprisonment without trial... You don't thing those might go down less well?

Well, habeous corpus is another matter, but measures to rope in an epidemic, I think can be tolerated if people are told they're necessary for the good of the public as a whole.

I know exactly where I stand on vaccinations and I think they should be enforced. I'm in favor of laws that tell parents they can't send their children to schools if they're unvaccinated for certain diseases.

Didn't we literally just do that in NYC a few weeks ago? Not the entire city mind you but where it was necessary.

Its a difficult thing to ask people to remain in an area that has an infectious, fatal disease with no cure. And very few people will stay there with their families when the death toll and hysteria starts to rise.

I agree, I'm just aware that others feel very strongly against those policies.

I dont know. Id be interested in the details though, this is my sort of thing!
I'd very much appreciate a few links for the morning!
So, before that link, just saw this over on the world news Reddit.

Quick Google search later, I think I was wrong about the quarantine, sounds like they were on the verge of one but they chose to do forced inoculations instead.

I jokingly said earlier this was a bioweapon they were engineering.

A laboratory in Wuhan is on the cusp of being cleared to work with the world’s most dangerous pathogens. The move is part of a plan to build between five and seven biosafety level-4 (BSL-4) labs across the Chinese mainland by 2025, and has generated much excitement, as well as some concerns.

Scientists outside China worry about pathogens escaping, and the addition of a biological dimension to geopolitical tensions between China and other nations. But Chinese microbiologists are celebrating their entrance to the elite cadre empowered to wrestle with the world’s greatest biological threats

/facepalm. Those idiots.

Even SARS really didn't kill that many people. I think all of these types of illnesses are overblown. It's the slow rolling ones like HPV or AIDS that really kill a lot of people.
They're saying SARS killed maybe 750. True or not, I can't say. The "flu" is said to kill a ton more than that yearly, IIRC.

Well, you can't legislate against stupidity, but you can put the screws to them if they're outlaws.

People in Bangkok, Thailand wear masks all the time because they think it helps them handle the polluted air a bit better. I always thought this was the reason through most of Asia.

I just put a hold on the book from my library, will take word from above that the movie isn't worth seeing.

The movie wasn't horrible. But if you read the book and then see the movie there is little to no relationship between the two... The only commonality between them is they both have Zombies.

I think that's part of it, but given the proliferation of it in a relatively sleepy mountain town, I have to assume there's reasons other than pollution.
