China just released a new rapid test. Available at local Chinese Restaurants.

that's funny but it could only come from the western market. Fortune cookies are not a Chinese thing (they were invented in San Francisco by some whitey Nabisco account manager)

The story I always heard was that it was invented by Chinese migrants to the US. So not a Chinese tradition, but not a white dude's invention either.

(Rather like Balti was invented by Kashmiri migrants to the UK).

Edit - groups will exoticise themselves if it pays the rent!

For the first time since this started I almost lost my cool.

I was in line paying for my groceries and this hippo pulled her cart up right behind me. No social distancing, no fucking mask, blathering about stuff with her hippo husband. I could feel their breath.

I bothered me to a great extent. I wanted to say something but her hippo husband was like 6'3" 300 lbs and it's not something I want to get into.

Fucking Covidiots.
Were it me, I'd have changed lines. Trade 5 minutes for peace of mind and maybe your health or even your life. Plus they might have gotten the message, if only subconsciously.

Rest of world depends on AstraZeneca's $4 vaccine to successfully complete its trials, get approvals, and be mass-produced and distributed.

J&J also has an adenovirus vector vaccine in trial...which Slaoui just said has accrued a lot of cases so they could be about ready to say something.

Also Gen. Perna says the CDC dashboard for vaccines administered is 72-96 hours behind.

Always felt that Februrary was the most depressing month. By that time one is getting utterly sick of winter, all the novelty of snow has worn off, and all the celebrations are over. Move Christmas to the end of Feb, I say.
True, February does kinda suck. There's a long period of time for days off where i work. New Years - Good Friday is a long time.
I was thinking more along the lines of celebrating Xmas after we can all be vaccinated and/or be outside, hence the Xmas in July thought.

Thats great for America but what is the rest of earth going to do?

Is the US buying all the Pfizer & Moderna vaccines? I think other countries have been buying them too. Some got sent to the UK before the US approved those 2.
Plus there are other vaccines still in the works.

Canada bought some 414M doses from all the possible vaccines. Trudeau commited to donating whatever we don't need to the global vaccine program COVAX.

Pfizer deal for another 100M doses approved.
On TV news last night that Pfizer agreed based on the administration's confirmation that they would make necessary supplies/materials available.

Singapore did purchase a bunch from Pfizer and the first shipment was delivered by air to Changi Airport a few days ago . I can't remember exact value or dosages.

Poor countries are worrying that they will be left out in the cold.

At least February has fewer days than other months, so there's that. In recent years Feb. has been warmer than usual, sometimes downright spring-like here (Berkeley, CA).

February is a tough month but I find the stretch of March through May the hardest. By that time I'm tired of winter, but there is still lot of it left, and we keep getting teased with spring with small stretches of nice days but it's not actually spring. The up and down weather makes it worse. And when it's finally nice enough to start going for walks, the sidewalks are full of slush, jagged ice, and water puddles you have to try not to step in or slip in, then add all the dog poop to the mix. Makes it very hard to walk anywhere. Same with all the trails. So much dog poop.

This is the 22nd consecutive day that the US has remained above 100,000 current hospitalizations. The CDC now projects up to 419,000 Covid-19 deaths in the US by January 16th. We just hit 323k deaths in America from COVID:

And yet:

Zooming out, this is such an odd situation, i.e. the disconnect that people have. California is getting hit pretty hard & the maskless caroling activity is a potential super-spreader event. One of my friends is a nurse at the local hospital & has people dying on her every day. Another one of my friends is in the hospital & just got bumped to 4 liters of oxygen due to COVID. I know people are antsy, but going out in the middle of the height of the second wave of COVID, which is spread primarily by respiratory droplets, to sing...just seems like we could wait a few months until most people have the vaccine & revisit some of our traditions.

I think the best news right now is the vaccine being out and starting to circulate. I really hope this puts an end before the other strains start to take over.

I do hope that things do in fact go back to normal though, like not needing to wear masks anymore or social distance etc. They could potentially keep that in place in case other new viruses come out. Not a HUGE deal, but I do miss the idea of just walking into a store with no mask and not worrying how close I am to people.

We just crossed 1 million Americans vaccinated, which is awesome:

Hopefully summer will get back to normal!

NY Times (unfortunately paywalled) has all the info:

To over-summarize, most vaccines are committed to high-income or upper-middle-income countries. Poor countries really need the AstraZeneca and Novavax vaccines to succeed, or as sdifox noted, for rich countries to donate leftover doses.

Earlier when I said "rest of world," I was implying all the countries that can't afford either the Pfizer ($20 per dose) or Moderna ($36 per dose) vaccines.

Move to San Diego. Nice all year. 🙂

That would require living in the states. 😛

Actually BC and GTA is nice too, but I prefer living in a small city. Even my city feels so busy sometimes, I would not mind living in a smaller one.

So looks like the vaccine is coming even in my region sooner than I thought. They are thinking January.

At this point though they do need to concentrate on the big areas like the GTA, that's where all the cases mostly are. We have a little over 100 cases in our region so far. The GTA is getting 100's per day.

Originally the time line seemed to indicate that we should not expect anything until like September so they are well ahead of schedule.

I'm watching a playthru of the original Dues Ex. Seems they had it right 20 years ago. This virus, and the special treatment the wealthy are getting. How people in the video game thought that the virus was man made. A few NPCs make this comment in the game. Do video games initate real life?
