Let's not minimize the dangers of actually getting the virus. Getting a headache and a small fever (in a few percent of patients) from the vaccine is a lot better than actually getting the virus.

Agreed and I'm still definitely getting the vaccine when it becomes available to me.

That's not what I read about vaccine side effects. I'm not saying I rather get the virus than the vaccine but from what I've read, the vaccine side effects are no joke. I think @local got the test vaccine and he said the side effects were pretty harsh.

Without the data from the trials being public, all that article is based on are anecdotal stories and some stuff the companies have said. What percent of people actually develop the worst side effects? That's unknown right now.

Also, it's a little weird to push this on the CDC. They shouldn't be the ones warning; that's on the FDA, manufacturers, and health care providers. In fact, under US regulations, companies must provide a balance in their communications about marketed products - that means efficacy and safety must be discussed side by side with equal prominence.

The vaccine may not be a walk in the park, but many people experience low grade adverse events from routine vaccinations. The risk-benefit most likely favors vaccination at this point given the global pandemic that is killing many and leaving some severely impaired.

If there was no COVID-19 pandemic and it was only in one small region of the world, basically no one would get a vaccine, since the risk-benefit would be almost all risk with little benefit. It's why you don't see the oral polio vaccine used much anymore (outside of areas with severe outbreaks) - the risk of iatrogenic polio is far greater than the chance of catching polio in regions where it has effectively been eliminated or reduced to a handful of cases a year.

Not exactly. After my first shot I had fatigue, body aches, digestive distress and a pretty bad headache for about 24 hours. But none of those quite rose to the level of harsh except maybe the headache, I have headaches quite often so my tolerance there is different than most. After my second dose I had a mild headache the next day. I assume I received the placebo because I thought the side effects should have been worse than they were. But in my discussions with the people administering the trial reactions actually are not all that bad, the news just likes to cover the people who had a serious enough reaction that they KNOW they have the real deal. Then I took the flu shot and didn't even know it happened so I am back to not being sure. I'd like to see the data on the percentage of side effects reported in the vaccine recipients.

I am hoping I will be notified on which shot I received when the EUA is given. There is no way I have not been exposed as I have been walking through covid wards with only a cloth mask, standing directly in the airstream of what I can only assume is infected air in hospital isolation rooms, going out to eat daily, working in an industry that laughs at mask wearers, working with people that are exposed and some have been confirmed positive. I found out recently I had a face to face, within 1 ft, meeting with 10 people for an hour where multiple people tested positive shortly thereafter but I only found out three weeks later. I am tired of being concerned but resigned to being exposed.

Will the US government make the vaccine mandatory? That is the question.

It would be unenforcable:

However, they can make life difficult:

1.They can make it a requirement for passports
2. Most hospitals require workers to be vaccinated due to working conditions
3. Most schools require it
4. Companies can require it as part of their health & safety program, and can fire you if you don't comply (barring exceptions, which create further limitations for human interaction, wearing a mask, etc.)
5. Per the article, places like airlines, restaurants, stores, and stadiums can require it, within the anti-discrimination laws, which means they don't have to give you full service, but can offer something like curbside pickup

I mean, I'm definitely in the pro-vaccination camp, but I'm definitely not in the "be the first one to try a fast-track vaccine" camp. I was on heavy antibiotics as a kid due to invasive surgeries & suffered poor health for over 20 years as a result. Thanks to modern medicine & advancements in our knowledge, I can eat regular food again (yay) & not feel like crap all the time (double yay), but yeah, on a personal level, I'm not real excited about being given a vaccine where the long-term results aren't known.

You got the flu shot or a COVID vaccine?

You definitely got it. The placebo is usually completely harmless like saline water. You should not have gotten any side effects from that.

I know that airlines are talking about proof of vaccination if you want to board any plane sooner than later.

Government could require students must have proof to go to class, employees could do the same for work, and so on.

I prefer to err on the side of caution on this particular issue. Besides it is not unusual for me to feel like crap on any given day.

The placebo effect is real. People will also sometimes get some adverse event that is unrelated (eg, a background rate for say, headaches). When the data is made public, it will be important to look at the adverse event rates of the active treatment arm versus the placebo arm.

Well if they try to make it mandatory I could see a possible Supreme Court decision in the near future. I just think that there are going to be plenty of Americans who will not take the vaccine. That could be well over 40%. I could see court cases brought on by anti-vaxxers who will argue that taking a COVID19 vaccine is against their rights as a tax paying American. We shall see...

One thing that mystifies me is that they actually are relatively popular here in TX where *waves hands at hundreds of taco trailers* there are way better options.

Moe's is a much better option although it's even more over-priced .... so are many of the Taco trucks here in CT nevermind in TX or AZ.

I used to like Chipotle but then I started noticing sanitary conditions going downhill in several different locations. The last straw was when I watched a girl scoop a big pile of dropped lettuce off the counter (soggy with a mixture of spilled stuff like sour cream) and throw it right onto my meal!

After I was able to choke down the bile (barley-mushroom soup? 😉 ) I told them to keep the food and walked. Shortly after this the story about folks getting sick came out. I was not even a little surprised.

😳

Personally, I'm not a big taco person and more like burritos - but I would figure your average taco truck is either doused in grease - or it just tastes bad. I'll frankly never understand why people think tamales taste good. You sincerely have a mental disorder if your brain is telling you that tamales taste good.

I know people like to *THINK* taco trucks is good food or something... it just isn't though. That's why none of them ever succeed actually building a brand and taking off - and instead those types of food are dominated by Chipotle, Torchys tacos, etc...

You would be mistaken on several points at least in CT and my area.

The health-department rules for sanitation in food trucks are far MORE stringent than they are for B&M establishments and as a result the vast majority are VERY clean. The ones that are not don't last long.

Also I know of at least 3 "Taco-Trucks" parked @ Long Wharf in New Haven nearly every day that are extensions of successful B&M restaurants and I would bet there are a few more.

Obviously there are a few nasty vendors/trucks but as I mentioned above they get inspected frequently and cited if unsanitary. Further competition is brisk and if your food sucks or your place is gross you'll be out of business even more quickly.

Yay for IKEA taco trucks!

Apparently 12 players on the Baltimore Ravens and some staff have tested positive for the virus. A Strength and Conditioning coach on the team basically showed up to work despite having symptoms and didn't report it. They were supposed to play tonight but that game got postponed to Sunday. Not sure if they will actually be able to field a team if the NFL decides to force them to play and not postpone it further (or force a forfeit).

Including Lamar Jackson ... looks like it may be a longer wait then Sunday to play the Steelers.

Astrazenica vaccine getting a lot of scrutiny where some experts are basically saying "Shit doesn't add up here..."

The dosing error has made a mess of things which was then significantly compounded by how AZ elected to release results.
