This ain't stopping in two waves. The thing has already shown to be a repeat offender--yes, lightning struck some twice.

Now go watch Counterpart on Amazon Prime and enjoy.

An open letter that made headlines calling for a herd immunity approach to Covid-19 lists a number of apparently fake names among its expert signatories, including “Dr Johnny Bananas” and “Professor Cominic Dummings”.
The Great Barrington declaration, which was said to have been signed by more than 15,000 scientists and medical practitioners around the world, was found by Sky News to contain numerous false names, as well as those of several homeopaths.
Others listed include a resident at the “university of your mum” and another supposed specialist whose name was the first verse of the Macarena.

Sky News discovered 18 self-declared homeopaths in the list of expert names and more than 100 therapists whose expertise included massage, hypnotherapy and Mongolian khoomii singing.

I suppose it's kind-of a political story, but "the university of Your Mum" made me laugh in a non-political way.

Not lending put pending wave. The more the virus circulates the more it can mutate. Is that not correct?
It has not gained the ability to infect anyone that it wouldn't infect before. Until there is some defense against the virus, there is no selective pressure to encourage a persistent change or adaptation.

Take two countries with similar population sizes and two different r0 values: r1.1 and r11. If we never get a vaccine and the virus continues to spread forever, it is the one with the slower transmission rate that will eventually see a more significant antigenic drift as it burns through the same number of people. The place where the r0 was higher has a higher chance of hitting herd immunity before mutations have shifted the genetics enough to matter. Non-pandemic flus and colds can't be easily dealt with because they burn through a population slower with some existing immunity and enough similar strains exist for more antigenic shifts between totally different strains.

A bigger concern here is an antigenic shift between SARS-CoV-2 and the much more deadly MERS that either gives a new MERS what it needs to spread easily from human to human (usually contracted from camels) or gives a new SARS-CoV what it needs to be more deadly.

Doubtful as only 1 in 10 have been infected thus far globally. Wait until it is 3-5 in 10.
This flu season wave was expected/predicted way back in the spring/winter and everyone laughed when certain government officials tried to distort that into a message about how it might just go away in the Summer (ugh). The fact of the matter is that we are better equipped with therapies, knowledge, PPE, and more to let this wave go higher without the same extreme reactions we had to take earlier this year... and we have multiple vaccines landing in the middle of this wave. Not saying it's going to taper off any time soon but we will see this Northern Hemisphere wave shooting up and eventually petering out as the last significant wave... at least for developed countries.

Latest news. Russia, Poland, UK, Czech, and others in EU see record number of cases.

Whatever happened to Russia releasing that vaccine way ahead of schedule?

Went to San Antonio for the weekend. Can stay fairly distant and walk around so not worried.

I am amazed at the mask wearing here though. Seems to be 80% use outdoors and that is the low end. I'm used to DFW where it is more like 20% at best.

Vaccine update: I only had a mild headache yesterday and some minor stomach issues. I'm still not sure which version I received so I'm assuming placebo. Looks like I may find out at the end of the month though as that is when Pfizer wants to declare victory.

Mask compliance is extremely high here in Austin. Inside any business it is total except for the occasional person with it pulled below their nose. Seems to be reflected in our low daily case count and low hospital utilization.

The placebo is saline so there should be no effects from that but yeah you should know late October or early November. At least if you did not get the candidate you'll be at the head of the line when it is authorized.

Refresh my memory. When they do vaccine trials like @local is in how do they test that it's working? Do they just check to see if people are producing antibodies? Or is it something else?

Testing for antibodies is part of it. The other part is literally comparing how many people get sick in the control vs test group. That is why they are only allowing people in that have exposure as someone with strong social distancing would be counterproductive.

So they'll look to see if people come down with symptoms. Do they test trial participants at intervals whether or not they have symptoms?

I was tested at both injections, I do not believe they will be testing on future visits. I do have a journal app that I fill out once a week about symptoms.

Right now the only thing they are really looking for is to get 5 people in the control group to be severely ill. That is the cutoff point to determine effectiveness of the vaccine.

Impressive the NBA closed out with no cases. When you don't argue with the science and use it to your advantage.

I ran the WDW Marathon in 2016,2017, and 2019. I got to see the arena they played in under construction in 2017...and in 2019 they started using it for their merchandise store for the race expo. Just kind of cool that I've walked around the facility.

I'm really happy they were able to provide the players an opportunity to work....so to speak. Professional athletes are a lot like Olympic athletes... In many cases, every year that passes increases the odds their career will be cut short. My fear back in May was that professional sports were going to lose out on a year, similar to the Olympics being cancelled.
