After wandering through Wikipedia, China now has over 8,000 confirmed cases, which is likely very under-reported. According to Wikipedia, that is roughly the number of confirmed SARS cases. The mortality rate is way lower than SARS, but considering the transmission rate...I don't want to jump to conclusions because I'm just another idiot reading the internet; anyone want to talk me off a ledge?

Just don't use a black light, what is seen cannot be unseen.

You can send it to @IronWing to process through his newly-built UV closet. That serves the dual purpose of actually disinfecting the stuff (unlike a black light), and exposing only IronWing to the visible unmentionables.

Everyone wins!

@Amused so.... what do you think? still nothing to worry about at all? cases doubled again, and now more widespread than sars was in one month, sars took 9 months to infect this many people.

I never claimed there is nothing to worry about.

I claimed that worrying about this and NOT the flu virus is insanity.

Believing the official numbers out of China is insanity. Expecting others to take comfort in conclusions made from them is lunacy.

Move along, folks! Nothing to see here.

In 20 years two outbreaks of Corona viruses have killed less than 2000 people.

In the same 20 years, the flu killed nearly 13 million people.

nearly 9000 people have died of the flu in the US this season so far.

I never said there is nothing to be scared of, but being scared of this and not the flu is insanity.

More to the point, anyone wringing their hands over the corona virus who has not had a flu shot is a fucking idiot.

...and before this existed there were 0 people who had died of it. Point is: your stated reason for it not being worthy of [such] concern is based on numbers we already know are lies. Granted, it probably isn't bad enough to warrant this, but we don't KNOW and history has proven that we are better safe than sorry when it comes to potential pandemics.

Awfully strong stance to take before we know how bad it really is. Many involved would say the exact opposite: anyone taking comfort in the early numbers from a source motivated to lie... is a f**king idiot.

I.
Never.
Said.
It.
Wasn't.
Worthy.
Of.
Concern.

Now that we got that out of the way...

I merely put it in perspective that if a person is NOT concerned about the flu, and IS shitting their pants over the corona virus, they lack ANY rational perspective on risk assessment. Especially if they do not get a flu shot every year.

I hope this spells it out for you.

Here is an article for you:

Then just what emotion were you dismissing? "Wringing hands" = Nervous concern... and there's plenty of reason for that.

The "perspective" you keep putting it in is a comparison which requires blind trust in numbers we already know are a lie. You're using a bad comparison to influence people into being less concerned than they probably should be.

Yeah great, nobody knows anything, thanks for clearing that up for us.

Oh, we know some actionable things.

It's worse than China will let us know.

It's not contained.

It is somewhat contagious during the incubation period.

Shill buyers for China are already depleting stocks which will be gone before we know whether or not we need them (granted, they do need them more than we do right now).

Heck, I just found out my brother is going to be in Thailand another two weeks. This could be a much bigger issue there by then (2nd most confirmed cases). May cause additional travel complications. Would've made more sense if he came back earlier but, well, "actionable" doesn't always mean you take that action.

To be fair the number of infected in China seem to be tracking right along with the number of tests they seem to be able to do in a day, just like in the US and everywhere else. I don't believe they are reporting much more than a fraction of the actual number of people infected. However I am hoping the number of dead is more accurate and not just only counting the ones that were also confirmed to have it while alive. Either way though right now we are only hearing about the bad and worst cases which will skew the numbers making it appear more deadly than it really is. That is why I am relying on numbers from the US and other countries to see the actual amount of concern required, I currently rank it somewhere around the concern I will be killed by a falling piece of the ISS tomorrow.

I thought this was one of the better articles about tracking and the numbers.

Or possibly can let us know if following established protocol of only reporting tested and confirmed cases, they can only test so many per day.

It's not contained.

Almost certainly not. The next person from Wuhan that shows up sick somewhere after being ill for the last several days without seeking treatment should be sent to a gulag if they recover. There is no excuse at this point for being ignorant and spreading the love. But you have to admit that it isn't exactly covering the world at this point either.

Still not confirmed from what I have seen. I want that confirmed by another lab that can verify until then I am taking that an excuse for the sudden appearance of all these cases.

Shill buyers for China are already depleting stocks which will be gone before we know whether or not we need them (granted, they do need them more than we do right now).

I personally think we should help China keep it within their borders for as long as possible.

Italy has stopped flights, British Airways, Lufthansa and others have stopped flights. AA pilot union sued to stop flights. Russia, Mongolia and N Korea closed land borders. Countries are aware and working on a cure.

It's like my worst game of Plague Inc ever.

Of course this would happen after we plan a SE Asia trip (including Beijing) for April. Hopefully it clears up...
Well, I guess we’re going to have to rebook and spend our first three days in Seoul rather than Beijing. I was holding out some hope that things would turn around in the next two months, but it’s hard to see that happening now. Bummer, that was the part of the trip I was most excited about.

Silver lining, I guess our savings in Chinese visas will cover the increased flight cost?

Chinese GDP is going to take a huge dump and that is what's really scaring the CPC
