Since Nokia cancelled all firmware updates for their Symbian phones &
Microsoft probably has no intention to keep Symbian OS, because they are concentrating on Windows Phones,

I HEREBY WOULD LIKE THE RELEASE OF SYMBIAN OS SOURCE CODES AND LATEST BUILDS TO OPEN SOURCE

FOR DEVELOPMENT FOR MILLIONS OF SYMBIAN USERS ALL OVER THE WORLD

Symbian OS still provides the base for many tens of millions of users worldwide (e.g. numbers from "Statcounter - Global Stats"). A lot of these people have trusted Nokia as their phone provider for over 20 years. Android, Symbian's biggest competitor in mobile OS, already has open source projects and allows development and distribution all over the world, and I would like to see Symbian opened up on a similar basis, for ongoing work by professional and hobbyist programmers.

SO PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION & KEEP SYMBIAN ALIVE BEFORE IT GETS FORGOTTEN http://www.change.org/Petitionen/nokia-corporation-microsoft-corporation-release-symbian-source-code-make-it-open-source-release-latest-update-builds-save-the-environment

Why should they release their code?

If you want it...buy it from them and release it yourself.

I don't think the codes are for sell mate...even if they were...why sould we buy the code?Nokia left us all...like they did with Meego...and now with Symbian...they have Windows phone...we just need the sourcea..for easier development...

Of course the code's for sale! If it's true that they aren't using any IP from it, it's just sitting there in an archive. They'll sell it to you to recoup some of their development costs.

However, I believe they probably are using some proprietary IP that's in the source code that they won't sell to you.

Well actually nokia passed off Symbian to Accenture...and they promised to keep supporting till 2016...but practically...now that nokia belongs to microsoft...they won't support us....anymore...we bought the devices...and nokia just left us all...we just want the code....we must buy it...that's unfair....please..support us...

So...you think they should just give away what they've spent thousands or hundreds of thousands of dollars developing?

Lemme guess...you also think it's ok to "share" movies and music...

Ok.... so... why don't..... you.. ask Accenture?

And seriously, why do you care? it's time to get a new phone when a mystery bug shows up after 2 years and is crushing and you can't get support.

I never understood the point of these petitions. Great, you got a bunch of people to "sign" it. How does that change anything? Hint: it doesn't.

Didn't Nokia create some open source thingy that wasn't really open source for Symbian already?

You got what you paid for. You were never guaranteed lifetime support.

still the sources are uselles for nokia....they won't develop anything....we can do something with them...it's the last thing nokia and microsoft could do for symbian users/fans/developers...I understand..that's all about money...but no one is that stupid to buy something..that nokia abandoned on the first place(I mean companies)...and for developers...would be too expensive...

1997 so I guess you're 16 years old. Why ...do you write... like a kid....despite.....your age?

They don't release the code because maybe there's some IP in there that they don't want to give out to the world (as only the US recognize software patents I think).

There is nothing to develop. If you phone worked for all the time since they stopped updates, then it won't stop working because of software. Problem solved, no support needed.
