They should have given it to a European Muslim or Roma activist given all the recent ultra far-right bigotry within European governments and societies against those minority groups. The publicity and exposure to the secret genocide would be really embarrassing to European governments and could bring some change demanded by the world community. I doubt that anything different is going to happen with this pick, even though he may be a courageous man.
Yup, always need a little extra crazy here.

Gorbachav? Man tries to liberalize Communism to compete with Reagan and the USA, has it fall around his ears, and wins the Peace Prize? If anyone one it should have been Yeltzin, for his courage in standing up to the Communist Party and its tanks.

As usual, you pretty much get it all wrong, but to pick one example, you are really clearly ignorant of the history with Yeltsin.

The guy was a corrupt disaster, it turns out, who derailed the USSR going in a better direction.

The big moment atop the tank - you know who the tanks had come to overthrow? Gorbachev.

Two years later, Yeltsin had the tanks bomb that same building to oppose legislators who opposed his 'reforms' in an anti-democratic act of violence.

Yeltsin sold off the state's resources far below their value to some wealth private interests in exchange for their support to get him re-elected - creating big problems for the country.

It was Yeltsin who appointed Putin to succeed him, it was Yeltsin who launched the terrible war on Chechnya. Nobel Peace Prize, indeed.

You should learn the history of Gorbachev as well, and why he did deserve it.

Wow... They finally got one right. This is almost worthy enough to forget about Gore/Obama the last couple times around. Good grief, they could have given either of those awards to Liu and avoided the all the face-palming.

Be that as it may... Good work Nobel Committee.

Y'know... you still can't really justify Gorbechev's prize without answering how Reagan got snubbed on that. It really was a 2-way street there.

Lefty of the year award? Really?

Mother Teresa
Henry Kissinger
Aung San Suu Kyi
Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders)
Dalai Lama
Desmond Tutu
Nelson Mandela
Yasser Arafat/Yitzhak Rabin/Shimon Peres
David Trimble

to name a few.

Does every topic have to be spin with you?

..
I went back and reviewed the list, and you are right, most clearly deserve recognition. The ones who don't (in my opinion) stick out foremost in my mind.

But - Henry Kissinger and Le Duc Tho? Concluded a "peace agreement" that every knew was a sham, allowing the communists to take the country and slaughter tens of thousands. Popular among lefties, but - peace?

Freakin' Yasser Arafat? Seriously, pausing between terrorist operations wins a prize?

Gorbachav? Man tries to liberalize Communism to compete with Reagan and the USA, has it fall around his ears, and wins the Peace Prize? If anyone one it should have been Yeltzin, for his courage in standing up to the Communist Party and its tanks.

Barack Obama? Seriously, serial apologizing for America wins the big PP?

Jimmy Carter? Anybody got an accomplishment for Carter? (Advocating that Jews should die doesn't count.) Carter's big talents are hating America, hating Jews, and promoting himself as a statesman whilst accepting every promise from any left-leaning (or just anti-American/anti-Jewish) thug even though everyone knows they have zero intention of abiding by them. Carter is the epitome of the useful idiot.

But again, you are right. I have let a handful of arguably bad choices color by perception of a group of people who are generally worthy of all praise. Since I've already eaten my words, I suppose I'll, um, eat a bug. (Not that hard on a motorcycle.)

Your honesty is noted.

My 2nd point was that, in a thread discussing the Nobel prize, you bring a left & right perspective which really wasn't appropriate to the topic, nor added to the conversation.

The Nobel peace prize helps move along the peace dialogs which is why the Yasser Arafat/Yitzhak Rabin/Shimon Peres combination was given it. Gorbachev was a major force in ending the cold war and the USSR. Similarly many winners have deserved their prize even if you don't believe in what they did or deserved.

he spoke words the world needed to hear.. not "either with us or against us" "smoke em outta dare holes" "AXIS OF EVIL" etc etc..

and you know what.. he got that prize and the first thing republicans thought wasn't .. "I hope our country turns out better than it is"... no.. they thought.. "I hate him even more now.. GRR GRR GRR... I hope NOTHING he wants ever happens.. I hope he (The president of the usa) FAILS"

^^ Just like when the world was at the side of the USA to do all it could to help bring those to justice who perpetrated 9/11... dumya blew that off and now the retards say a peace prize given for great speeches that inspire others and bring people together is hogwash and should also be shit on

Obama didn't even think that he should have gotten it (For the record, He handled the reception of the nobel prize in the best fashion possible). Come on, are you hearing the trash that is coming out of your mouth "Spoke the words the world needed to hear." LOL. ANY democrat could have been put in his exact same position and they would have said the exact same things he did (perhaps less charismatically).

He won the nobel for campaign promises. Every candidate ever has told the world "what it needed to hear" to get elected. How come they don't all get nobels?
