the guys undeniably a douche, but really? do you guys expect cyclists to stop at a stop sign if no cars are present? how about a traffic light? you do know bike can't trigger the sensor and you would be waiting until a car pulled up. I always roll though that shit. I do yield for cars if they do have the right of way. otherwise I'm not wasting my time, energy or momentum.
Agreed, but I always brake and gear down quite a bit...almost a complete stop. (I don't ride on busy streets BTW.)
I can't watch the vid (blocked at work), but, dickscarf or not:
1. Some cyclists are assholes - running lights and stop signs, hogging lanes, riding unpredictably, etc.
2. Some drivers are assholes - running lights and stop signs, hogging lanes, cutting off other drivers and cyclists, etc.
3. Many drivers and many cyclists actually do follow the rules and yet still get into the occasional incident.
4. When there is an incident involving a cyclist and a vehicle, the cyclist always loses, sometimes badly.
5. North American cities for the most part are set up for drivers, not cyclists. Cyclists take a huge risk in riding city streets.
Until there are separated (barriers?) bike lanes and traffic lights for bike traffic (yes, I have ridden in towns in the Netherlands that have these), expect to see regular incidents involving cyclists. There was an article in the paper today (can't find the link) saying that injury rates are 15% lower in the Netherlands than Canada, despite the fact that almost no one wears helmets there.
However, it's a chicken and egg scenario. Very few people ride bikes regularly here (I think 3-4%) so it would be pretty expensive to build the infrastructure for so few people. I'm sure many more people would ride regularly if such infrastructure existed, but they're rightfully afraid to do so in the currently hostile riding environment.
