A lot of people watch more TV than that per day. Personally, I have to mix things up throughout my week or else I will get bored, but when I am not playing WoW I am either watching TV/Movie with my girl or playing a different game. I can't really go out during the week after work because of my kid so it acts as a fun substitute. The weekends are a different story of course. I don't know why so many people look down on those kinds of weekly routines just because WoW happens to be a part of it.
I'm no psycologist - but I'd venture to guess that what truly defines it as an addiction is the feeling of helplessness or unwillingness to STOP at any given moment and do something else.
A good example would be TV, because it's one you used. I know I've sat and watched TV for a 6-8 our span a few times in my life, and I know some who watch TV religiously. I wouldn't go as far as to call that an addiction, however, because those people can (typically from my personal observation) shut off the TV at any given time if better entertainment happens to strike them. Now, the same argument can also be used for many games - WoW included to a degree. I'd suggest calling it an addiction is accurate if you have the inability to stop playing, feel obligated to "show up to job #2" - whatever it may be.
I mean, if you hold a piss for 3 hours because you don't want to get up from your chair for fear a missed heal in a 60 second period would wipe your Zul'Aman run, then you likely fall into the addiction category. However - for the majority of players who CAN stop, it's just that; an alternate form of entertainment. Personally, I found it adequate because I find American television to be absolute mindless drivel outside say the History Channel, Discovery, etc. And even they have boring as hell shows which have hour long episodes about gunpowder.
Gaming is the same as television; a form of entertainment that can become addicting to those who do not have the ability to root their routines and priorities, however it's probably more rare to be truly addicted. Addiction and convenience can often be confused if taken too lightly. For me, instead of watching some retarded fake-baked pop-culture born consumer bitch cry on MTV about the Lexus her daddy bought her for her 16th birthday being the wrong COLOR, and having her entire prepubescent little life ruined because of that, I'd prefer to run around Warsong Gulch like a chicken with my head cut off until an opportunity comes along to do something more exciting.
Entertainment mediums all have their places in society. Video games are simply the medium of the future. As the current game-born generation continues to grow up, TV will struggle more and more in the face of internet media. Thats simple observation.
