You say that like it's a bad thing.

Nope, just that you don't know what you're talking about or any job where you might be on call or be required to accomplish tasks/deliverables by a particular deadline.

I actually do have a job where there are deadlines... some very strict... thankyouverymuch...

But I'll be dammed if I'm going to sacrifice my personal time because some sales person wanted to kiss up to a customer and give a deadline that is unreasonable. I'm sorry that you think a job is more important than life or that anyone will give a damn whether you got a project done on time or not at your funeral.

I'd rather get fired and work a no-skill service job and still be able to enjoy my life than spend my life worrying about whether or not someone's stupid computer program didn't crash. I mean, unless it's the software for some life-saving technology, it's really stupid to think that ANYONE'S life means less than getting it fixed.

 You think his life is in danger because of a tough week at work? You guys are so dramatic.

I'm talking about "In General"... I'm not saying nobody is going to care at your funeral because I think he's going to die... I'm saying that when all is said and done... after you've lived your life... nobody really gives a shit if you got someone's project done a day late so you could enjoy what should be your "free time".

No job of mine will EVER be more important than my personal happiness.

No but the customer, your company and your boss might appreciate it which may effect one's review, bonus, career opportunities at the company.

I've never worked for a software company, but to me it seems like working without sleep for a week would create more errors than you'd fix.

There was a professor who was doing a study on the mental and physical effects of sleep deprivation on the body. He had his aids do everything they could to keep him awake and i think he lasted 5-6 days.

I think a couple of months later he ended up killing himself.

Because none of those things can actually translate into increased happiness later on in life as a result of hard work now, right?

Nobody is saying work yourself to death, but it doesn't hurt to temporarily put your own life on hold if it can result in greater "happiness" down the road.

I am not going to read the entire thread, so I am not sure if this has been suggested, but you should try smoking marijuana.

Good luck. Not being able to sleep sucks.

I dont even think its humanly possible to go a whole week without sleeping. Your body won't be able to do it, ESPECIALLY if you arent used to it or prepared for it...

You might be able to go 48-72 hours with ZERO sleep, but I dont think you will get much further than that. Not to mention, brain capacity after 24 hours will be greatly diminished, and will get worse with every waking hour

Better living through chemistry...

Fuck that. If no one's life is in danger, fix it during regular work hours.

Use stimulants (primatene/caffeine if need be) for the first few days, take at least an hour nap every 12. After the first 48 make sure you sleep at least a few hours. We don't want you dieing.

Right, and the company can compensate me for my time if they demand more of it. They have me for 40 hours a week. They have no right to DEMAND that I stay anything past that. They have no right to interrupt my plans if the sales people decided to sell a customer on unachievable goals without consulting the people that actually DO that work. The sales people can do the work themselves for all I care.

Trust me, when I'm on the company's time I work my ass off and I take pride in my work. When the company is on MY time it's a different story. I DO take pride in my work when I'm on company time, I DO have a strong work ethic, it's just that if a company demands that I'm going to spend my free time working, that goes out the window.
