I do not understand this stuff... Why do people always "Well I have a job still" quote this crap. If you are good at what you do a MAKE a difference then people will recognize it. If you work at a helpdesk, fast food joint, construction or any place that requires low skill labor then it is a different story.

I am just sick and tired of people thinking this is the way it is. I would never ever think to myself that I am lucky, in fact it is the other way. The company should be lucky to have you. Obviously for those not making a difference and just doing what is needed will not feel this way.

Because in a number of structured larger corporations raises are a clearly defined, budgeted expense. They are nothing more than COL adjustments, not a true raise. If you want to make any real increases in income then you either change positions or employers. Staying in the same role, regardless of how well you perform is going to get you nothing.

In these types of companies everyone gets 2%-5% regardless of merit. When the budget gets tight and the company needs to trim some costs, what would you rather give up? Your job, or your modest 2%5% raise? My company gave up on raises. I'd rathe that than shitcan a couple hundred people.

Most companies are controlled by the major shareholders = cutting costs to remain profitable where possible = no raises, dropping 401k matching, forced time off [to burn vacation off the books], etc. The top performers in our company aren't getting raises however they are getting a small "thank you" monetary bonus.

If you really feel the company should be lucky to have you and you think it's ludicrous they won't give you a raise - then you should have absolutely ZERO problems finding another company that isn't affected by the global meltdown and is handing out bonuses, raises, hookers and blow at every company meeting. 🙂

everyone at my old job took 5% pay cuts plus 2 weeks work furlough...

we had an announcement of no pay raises this year and we had massive layoffs in April, i hate to be "that guy" but I am quite happy just to have kept my job.

My place is really bad... still with out job... have been unemployed for around 14 months... lol... I was thinking on forgetting about finding a job and college crap and start farming a bit of the garden or inside the condo with pots lol...

any idea if companies or whatever, is giving jobs... or the axe still getting pull in a lot of places?

Is this real? I guess you've never been in a company forced to downsize. I lost 4 coworkers on my 10 person team. And yeah, they were all skilled, and they all worked their asses off. Other individuals a level above me took packages because they were certain that with their experience and reputation within the industry they would easily be able to land new positions. Guess what? Pretty much all of them have been out of work for 18 months. These are people with families, mortgages, and pride resulting from years of driving value to the firm.

But no, you're right, if only they had MADE a difference, people would have recognized it. Go crawl back to your Ayn Rand fantasy land and don't let reality intrude on your self serving views.

Exactly. I've got plenty of friends who are qualified in their fields and just can't find jobs. Sometimes it doesn't matter how good you are, if nobody is hiring they won't even look at your resume.
