WTF. Isn't wrestling one of the oldest human sports and one of the original Olympic sports for the Greeks besides the marathon??

Yes, but RATINGS!

yes and no.

Baseball had high ratings but was dominated by the US. it was removed.

i been reading about why they took wrestling away. the IOC claims it was rateings. many are saying its really the fact that non-core country's are dominating.

also they had to make room for new sports. rugby and golf are not included claimed one article.

either way its bullshit.

Karate has been pushing hard for inclusion. And as one of the candidate cities is Tokyo, if they win, do not be surprised to see karate win the slot. Wrestling is mostly a "superpower" sport, but there are great karateka all over the planet. And of course the Japanese would have a serious home field advantage if the games are held there. Baseball would suit them well too. Turkey and Spain have strong karate bases too.

I feel like all those arguments could be made even more strongly about the modern pentathlon. Why didn't they get rid of that instead?

The Article said:
Wrestling will now join seven other sports in applying for inclusion in 2020. The others are a combined bid from baseball and softball, karate, squash, roller sports, sport climbing, wakeboarding and wushu

Wrestling should beat out most of these handily. It is kind of stupid it was removed in the first place though.

I'm all for karate, as long as it's kyokushin. We already have one game of tag in the olympics.

They should had dropped ping pong (table tennis), tennis, skeet shooting, or badminton, just to name a few, before they decided to drop wrestling.

It won't be knockdown karate; I do not think it would get ratified. Hell, boxing and TKD are already overly heavy on the safety, as you quipped. Likely to be JKA or WKF variant. WKF allows some nage-waza, so it would make for the most spectator friendly. But Shotokan is huge, with a presence in most countries on the planet. So, we will probably end up with a boring gyaku-tsuki duel. It is such a cookie cutter system, it makes panda bear blue.

Freestyle is far more fun to watch (and compete in). Greco-Roman though is old and what countries have wrestling it's usually Greco-Roman.

I never cared for Greco-Roman (did it a few years). it's not very popular in the US at all. so finding places to do it is a pain. most of the time you have Freestyle or folkstyle wrestling (used in school sports).
