No more ramen: Top quality tv dinners for cheaper than budget dinner prices!!!

yhelothar

Lifer
I noticed today at vons that they extended their amazingly awesome premium safeway select brand to their TV dinners. Safeway select items I find are generally better than chain restaurants, and has that family owned restaurant taste.

They sell them in at least 24oz-36oz packages for $5 each!!! that's about .14-.18 per ounce, cheaper than the near dogfood level budget gourmets!!!!!

I had the chicken enchilads, which costed me a whole two fiddy for dinnar last night, and with an avocado/lime, I'd say this easily beats rubios in quality(IMO)!!!

If you buy the really big packages that are 50-100oz that has over 10 servings, you could get them for nearly 14 cents per ounce!!!
A day's worth of food is only about $5 at this rate!

Edit:
OK, looks like prices has gone up a bit. They're now $5 each for most. Prices and package sizes vary depending on entree.

Prices(2/21): Anyone wanna help out? 🙂
Chicken Enchiladas - $4.99/32oz = $0.156/oz
Meat Lasagna
5 Cheese Lasagna
Chicken Fettucini Alfredo
Orange Chicken

Sounds good, though I am not familiar with the following places/brands/terms:
Vons
Safeway Select
"one fiddy"
Rubios

I'm from Cleveland....what part of the country is this deal available?

Vons = grocery store name
Safeway Select = House brand name
"one fiddy" = $1.50
Rubios = Mexican-ish restaurant known for their fish tacos

Maybe this is a west coast thing.

I just grab a Banquet meal which isn't much, but its only a dolla and isn't that bad. That and a tostito's pizza (also for $1) ftw.

Tostito = chips for salsa
Pizza = Totino's ... bang for your buck... literally 😉
Banquet meals are also pretty well priced, not for the healthy lifestyler of course.
Two words... HOT POCKET! 😀

With hot deals like this is it any wonder everyone in this country is grotesquely obese?

Thanks OP, gonna drop by Safeway after work to see if the deal is live there as well.

Banquet meals are about a third of the price of the safeway stuff, but they're about a third in weight and a fifth in quality. So you're getting 1/15th food for 1/3rd of the price.

That said, it's a pretty good deal never the less, just that the vons stuff is a mindblowingly good deal 😀

Yes, and I forgot to mention about safeway select pizza too!!! They're also the best IMO. Definitely beats any chain pizza restaurant. 🙂
The pizza is all freshly made daily from their quality deli, NEVER FROZEN! When you buy the pizza, the dough is still live! That's how fresh it is!

Neither am I. I guess not all of us are up on the ghetto lingo 😕

hey, you are not going to take 14c a pop rame away from me! drain the grease, put only less than half of the seasoning and add veggies, nothing wrong with my ramen 😛

being a cheapass I am, I never felt these TV dinners were really that cheap, always less than fulfilling for just one pack. but hey, thats 12.5c before taxes! count me in, thanks for the post 🙂

do they sell these at walmart?

edit: nvm, so vons is an online outfit... will take a look at it in a bit, thx again

O RLY?! i presume you're speaking from personal experience that you've actually compared it to the safeway stuff?

Vons is a Safeway brand, as they bought the chain, along with Dominicks, which is a midwest chain. Sounds like a decent deal if these meals nuke properly. I'm always looking for a cheap way to get through lunch, which can be hard in the financial district of San Francisco.

Banquet meal were onsale for $0.59 last week at Kroger, I got 30 of them.

Not great, but edible for 59 cent.

They also had pot pies for $0.37 and buy 5 get 1 free too whic made it even cheaper.\\I got 20 of them.

Pot pies are pretty good actually.

basically i got 3 weeks food for $20.00

Oh yeah i worked for Safeway 23 years ago as a bagger when i was 16, actually a pretty good company, they paid better than other stores, and had good benefits.

Safetway was the largest Grocery store chain in the world, I don't know if they are anymore though.

there in like 50 countries, or were.

I had a Totino's three-cheese pizza to myself a few hours ago. It came out 15 minutes ago and IT BUUUUUURNNNS!

We actually have honest-to-goodness Safeway grocery stores around where I live, so I'll check this out sometime, thanks OP.

Btw, Banquet stuff is what I would consider the absolute bottom of the barrel, as far as TV dinners. I have no idea what they use to make those runny mashed potatoes, but I doubt its got any real potatoes in them. Don't get me started on the mystery meat that goes into the Salisbury steak. Their pies, on the other hand, I actually enjoy as a snack - they're pretty tasty if you cook them in the oven as opposed to the microwave.

which has literally 3 small pieces of meat on the pizza, about 20-30 shreds of cheese, and tastes and looks like cardboard both frozen or cooked.
