Ok, I may sound a little bit fanatical, but i hate Microshit. I just want to provide an alternative OS suite which is just as good as MS Office and its free. Spread the Love.

Please bump and spread this around. So when you grandma goes to buy MS Word, just download this and burn it to a cd for her. This program is completely free and excellent and it works on multiple platforms.

You have to register, but just BS it or sumthing.

Out of curiosity, what OS are you using?

Used it a bit, it's ok.

If you're dying for a cheap office suite, you can pick up a Corel WordPerfect Suite for under $10.

I agree with the above............

If your business requires you to communticate with many others whom use MS Office on a daily basis to survive, your little rant is meaningless as the world runs on MS Office and unless you want to cut your own throat........so will you!;)

Um, if you guys haven't tried star office recently, it is much better than MS Office almost all your basic needs. As for they paying, part, in general most people waste 500 dollars to buy MS office, when it SHOULD be sold for 100 dollars if MS wasn't a monopoly. Yes most people buy that crap, when all they are going to do is write term papers. Why make them buy word for 100 dollars when you can get a program just as capable for those purposes for free. Thats the people who should be using star office.

personally i think microsoft makes a good variety of products for decent prices. you can go on ebay and get microsoft word works suite 2002 and you get word from office xp and the rest of the stuff is works 2002. word being the most used app, i think i could deal with it. plus the spread sheet they have in works is compatible with excel files now

Just Like MS Office, Sun does not offer the platforms I want with Star Office. Other than that I would probably use that over antiword to convert proprietary word docs into standard text files :)

Why do you think it sucks? No one has given me any good reasons.

Free does not necessarily mean it would suck. You end up paying $$ for the most used OS and it still sucks!!

Been using BOTH M$ Oh! Fizz and Staroffice under win, and Koffice @ linux.

Its rather difficult to convert any document from one form to another, tho' SO comes pretty close. However, I believe it it yet to find a wider acceptance.

I use Arial ft. size 11 in SO whereas in Oh!Fizz the same document appears in Arial 10. I nearly got screwed in my assignments @ school because of that (I had a lot of explaining to do
and eventually the kind Prof. relenetd.)

But I dont know if I will be so lucky in future. So here's what I do: I use SO, and convert all documents to PDF. period.

I used Star Office for a few months then decided to reinstall MS Office97.

There were just a few minor annoyances that pulled me back to the "dark side."

1. Java apps start up very slowly. Even with the quick launcher (which basically loads some of the modules at boot), it could take 10-15 seconds before the program would even open.

2. No shell integration with Office documents. I had to manually associate .doc, .xls, etc. with Star Office.

3. Weak search/replace function in word processor.

4. .doc compatibility problems. Saving a text document in .doc format would cause all sorts of weird problems if you try to open it in MS Word (e.g. you can't spell/grammar check it).

Um maybe its not as good as MS and maybe its not a business standard.

Star office is just another POS trying to reinvent the wheel.

That is mostly opinion. I cant stand Office. I find it a horrible suite to try and work against.

<< and maybe its not a business standard. >>

There is no standard. For a standard to be any good it has to be open so that anyone can follow it.

<< Star office is just another POS trying to reinvent the wheel. >>

Sorry you feel that way. I hope you get some discounts on your software. :)

You might want to wait until Star Office 6 is released. It is a lot I mean A LOT better than the older suits. I have Star Office 6 BETA and it is really pretty good. They still have a few glitches to work out on it before it is released, but it seems pretty stable under Win ME.

In Star Office 6 the whole interface is changed. It still isn't as familiar as MS Office, but it isn't bad. If I didn't all ready have Word 2000 I would probably wait until ver. 6 comes out and see what I thought of it before buying.

I hope Sun does well with the new version.
