Just came across this office alternative

Hey...it's free :D

EasyOffice

<<Save money and help make it less of a Microsoft-run world with this
free suite of office tools.
EasyOffice includes word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation applications.

EasyWord is compatible with Microsoft Word .doc, Adobe PDF, HTML, and
.zip files; and it includes English, French, Spanish, Italian, German,
Portuguese, Swedish, medical, and legal dictionaries. EasySpreadsheet
is compatible with Microsoft Excel, and lets you e-mail spreadsheets
with one click. Both of these applications include a feature that
reads your text to help you catch mistakes. EasyOffice also includes
EasyPresentation, which lets you create slide presentations, and its

i personally like office. i dont care, i would never pay like $800 for it, but if they were all free i'd take ms office. there.

now, personally i tried corel word perfect office a few versions back. their word processor is still better than word i think, but i didnt like their spread sheet. but i think wordperfect is very good, i'm just not sure its free on windows. i know its free on linux. anyways... i still think that for the normal guy like me who doesnt wanna spend $800 on office, i'd just buy MS word works suite and be happy.

i also went and checked out corel's page. apparently corel wordperfect office 2002 is a free trial product now. 30 day trial. i like that, at least you can try it out first. too bad they arent giving away wordperfect anymore like theydid when they were developing linux (i being a former investor in corel and lost a lot of money when they crashed from linux.. damn sucks). microsoft must have made them stop developing it when they invested in corel.

This one works with Windows XP :D

602Pro - PC Suite

It's billed as an alternative to MS Office, but it's far better! And it's free.

There are four applications in the Suite. A word processor, that supports MS Word format;
a spreadsheet, that supports MS Excel format; a graphics editor, that supports IE 5 formats;
and a digital photo organizer.

With the look and feel of MS Word, 602Text is the best word processor alternative on the market today. It internally uses the MS Word DOC format (9x/2000/XP) and it can also open TXT, RTF and HTML files.
In many situations you will find this word processor more useful than expensive
solutions from other vendors.
602Text is not overloaded with unused functions and that is why it is small and effective
for any PC user.
On the other hand, widely used functions allow even a beginner
to easily create high-quality professional looking documents.

Comes with built in dictionaries for English (UK and US), French, German,
Italian, Portugese (Brazilian), Spanish (Castilian).
The unique MagicText function adds a professional touch in just
a few seconds.
602Tab is an Excel compatible spreadsheet with over 150 available functions.
Uses the XLS format (9x/2000/XP) and it can also open CSV and DBF files.
There's lots more, but download and use it - you'll never regret it.
14.01MB. Windows XP/Me/NT4/2000/98/95. Free. Found at
602 Pro

You might want to wait until Star Office 6 is released. It is a lot I mean A LOT better than the older suits. I have Star Office 6 BETA and it is really pretty good. They still have a few glitches to work out on it before it is released, but it seems pretty stable under Win ME.

I second that. Didn`t have 5.2, but have read the bad press. I have 6.0 Beta and like it a lot.

Not an anti-MS zealot. Just like having a choice.

Ok, I left this thread a long time ago, but its interesting and I'm bringing it back.

FYI, MS Office is worthless to 95% of users. Most people would be totally fine with star office and they wouldn't have to waste 300 dollars so a paper clip can tell you to write a letter.

I can't believe no one brought this up.

As for word being the standard, the only reason it became the standard is MS bought its way into it. They bought word from some company back in the DOS days, when Corel OWNED it. Corel was many times better, but MS showed its $ and forced word upon us all.

Now, if you ask me, the actual best Word Processor is Word Perfect. MS still can't do reveal codes. It is the BEST thing ever. Shows you exactly how your paper is formatted, however, I don't even need that.

Cause I reinstall my computer every month, I'm too lazy to look for the cd, so its much easier to grab the star office file off of my server and install it. MS office SHOULDN'T be the standard, because it really isn't. It only is the standard cause of MS's monopoly. All I'm trying to say, is that if you don't NEED MS office, DON'T waste your money buying it. If you NEED it, at least pirate a copy :)

Unfortunately, most companies I deal with use Microsoft products, therefore for anything I submit I use the MS office suite. And since I don't like installing multiple programs that do the same thing, I've just kept with Microsoft. But hey, it's okay, I only pay $5 for the suite (legally of course). ;)

And whatever happened to good ol' AmiPro? ;) :p

At least you acknowledge that MS Office is standard, and as most people know, fighting the system doesn't work too well.
I'll stick with my already paid for MS Office

Installed this on all my systems. While MSFT products are superior when it comes to features... this thing is lean small and does a great job for the most part.

To those of you capping Star Office... I suggest you give it a retry... i mean the entire package is like around 70mb.

Well, I admit i was not aware that people really paid for MS Office programs :D I will certainly try to encourage my previous misconception.

<< If someone told me that at least the Word Processor was compatible with Office 2000, or XP, then I would try it. I think most people might have the same feelings.

EDIT: After searching for a few minutes, I came across this page Star Office, which states that this program IS in fact compatible with MS Office. Maybe I will check it out.

I was about to chime in here... but you corrected yourself.

You have an option to save your files as a office 2k doc file.

I've had no compatiblity problems so far.
