Steam forums are blowing up about this.

There's a more elaborate post that I can't find right now, but this is part of it :

"Sean Murray @NoMansSky

To be super clear - No Man's Sky is not a multiplayer game. Please don't go in looking for that experience."

Apparently, it's possible to see the result if a Player changes the environment somehow, but there's no Chat feature, and I don't believe there are visible Player models.

The only real (?) MP type aspect is the uploading of "named" or "discovered" objects to the Cloud, so if you're the first to discover and name something it gets reflected in the Universe should someone else run across it.

So anyone on here got it for ps4? I haven't read any reviews and was wondering how it was. I figure soon I'll try and rent it from a Redbox to see for myself.

Found more on the MP:

So how does the game handle two players being in the same area?

When you and another player are in the same area, unlikely as it is given the scale of a universe, with planets that can be the size of Earth or bigger, you’ll be placed in the same lobby – in this lobby data is shared. The terrain one player blows up is visible on the other players machine, and so on and so forth.

Sounds sweet, so my friend can see all the lewd things I’ve drawn in the sand? Nice.

Yes, but don’t expect much more than that. No Man’s Sky at its heart is a single player experience, it’s just set in a multiplayer universe. You can find your friends, but there’s no interaction to be had, no trading, no messaging system, etc. you can kill them if you’d like – but that wouldn’t accomplish much if you’re after a co-operative experience.

However, don’t give up hope – the developers at Hello Games have expressed interest in some basic multiplayer features, if enough people want it, and the game sells well enough to warrant continued development, we may see a co-operative multiplayer with a bit more depth. Another one of these wishes is ground vehicles, but currently, you’ll be scampering around on your own two legs.

You can be sure that if this is a hit, the developers will be continuing to support it, they’ve expressed this several times in interviews.

I doubt weed will help this game much...

Was thinking it was gonna be a nice visual trip in space checking out crap. But, Saw a few people play it, and to be honest and frank......Graphics suck... and it just looks really boring.

Also...... you bust open holes, kill a lot of shit, or break into factories and fly off, if you return, it's all back to the way you got to it. It's not like you can tag or write your name on the rocks ... dunno, I really wanted a stoner game.

Maybe farcry needs to make a game like this. To me, there doesn't seem to be much varient on the planets. tho, like others have said, maybe new maps and stuff will be add later, but for me, in order for that happen a ton of people will need to throw down cash and be interested for 3-6 months, from what I see... Not much of a chance that happening.

I'm really torn on this game. Lol. It just looks like there isn't much of anything to do. Although I am a casual gamer. I have never completed a single game in my life.

Just read on Kotaku, there is no multiplayer interaction. Other players can affect the terrain but that's it, you will never physically see or interact with another player, even if you happen to be on the same planet as they are. The game is becoming less and less appealing now and without player interaction, I can see it becoming very repetitive real quick.

Yeah, I mentioned the MP issues above.

To me, this is not an issue as I prefer SP.

You may want to look into Empyrion - Galactic Survival (there's a thread on here), it may be closer to what people are thinking NMS is supposed to be (has both SP & MP), though I don't think it's on as grand a scale as NMS is supposed to be.
There's a Anniversary update link on that thread I'll add shortly if you want to look into it a bit.

I'm likely going to get NMS anyway after a few Patches.
My biggest issue is that apparently the Textures were downgraded somewhat over the past few months - I'm sure there will be Mods/Patches with the option to address this in the future.

I'm wondering about the story/gameplay.
If that's good, then a lot of the little niggles can be overlooked - this is what I'm waiting to find out about.

The dev has said that the servers are being crushed right now and they're surprised the Atlas uploads are still working. It should be worked out once they iron out their infrastructure for real world load.

This game reminds me of games like Spore, Black & White, etc... An empty shell of a game that will sell millions on hype alone. They even had the gall to price it at $66 CDN.

It's sad to see these kind of games get rewarded with chart topping sales, only to provide a few hours of fun followed by days (weeks? months?) of disappointment.

I imagine it will be fun for a few hours (long enough to no longer be refundable).

So from what I'm reading so far it doesn't offer a lot. A rental will probably as far as it will go for me.

Well with multiplayer being essentially non existent it will go on my Steam sale, play it later list. Hopefully there are a couple of the billion planets left for me to name a year or so from now.

This makes me so disappointed. It was really the only game in 2016 I've had my eye on. I've been skeptical, but was hoping it'd be a good exploration game at the very least.

On the plus side... a lackluster release may lead to cheap prices sooner. I'm sure I'll try it eventually, but it needs to be cheaper.

I concur, at this rate I can relax and not buy the game until it's a bargain at like $20.

Speaking of user reviews, the verified purchasers on Amazon are pretty favorable. I'm inclined to think it's not as bad as metacritic paints it out to be, though has a lot of gaps that need to be filled. With the performance issues on the PS4, this is most definitely a PC purchase.

I've been out of town since the launch, but after watching some video, the following review seems to mirror my impressions thus far:

http://www.forbes.com/sites/insertc...-the-game-i-thought-it-would-be/#5121a7a71284

That's a good article, and the part that most resonated with me is:

I understand why many would be bored with No Man’s Sky given players used to consuming a diet of action-oriented RPGs, but saying No Man’s Sky is boring is like saying a leisurely hike through the woods or a cross-country drive is boring just because it isn’t bungie-jumping or street racing.

To me, driving cross country or hiking through the woods just for the scenery is boring. :|

I'm quite the opposite. I love long drives, and the views/scenery is a huge part of why mountain biking is my favorite outdoor hobby. Especially freeriding where you never quite know what you'll see.

I jumped in the game with an open mind try to suppress the hype around it. It worked well and it even helped appreciate more the game for what it is. The first hour was just roaming and trying to understand the concepts and mechanics behind the game. I really like how they simply put you in a random system on a random planet with a random ship and just throw you at the game like this.

It start has a stressing survival game and slowly grows to an exploration, trading, scientific and ressource management game.

I don't really like the low space you have to gather stuff but when you realise that it's everywhere and you can simply sell them for big money it becomes less of a burden.

It's what I wanted it to be but with ugly graphics :p

It's an awesome experience, equally relaxing and stressful, well done and immersive.

My first planet was renamed "Debute" and I like the place even though it's getting at -75C at night.

Love it when people "review" a game they have never played. It may be an open ended game that doesn't hold your hand, but it certainly is not a shell of a game.

Finally an ATer that actually played it. This gives me a little hope. I still hate the idea of juggling resources because of a limited inventory, but I hate even more judging a game like this on such a thing

I watched some people play it on Twitch last night, and ugh... it seems the game can be pretty much summed up as a space survival game. The problem for me is that I find survival games incredibly boring as they normally place a heavy emphasis on all the mundane aspects of life (e.g. eating, sleeping, etc.) when I'd rather be playing a game.

Now that I gave my old GPU to my little brother he was asking if I was going to get this game. He showed me a let's play video of some guy doing the first few parts. Like you describe there was a lot of emphasis in collecting the right materials to repair your ship, etc.

The guy could not run for some reason either. The menus remind me way too much of destiny and it meant crafting a lot of components and hiding in caves at night due to cold temperatures.

While it looked interesting and sort of cool at first I'm sure you do the same stuff over and over again as your gear and ship will degrade. Not sure I would enjoy it either but I did check Redbox and they didn't have it yet.

If you have to slowly walk everywhere that's kind of lame too. From what I gathered the exploring seems neat I just know I'll get bored eventually without any objective.

Really wanting to like what I see of this game. The idea sounds amazing but it's starting to look more and more like a "wait for a steam sale purchase" type game for me. Still have Legion, Deus Ex, Civ 6, and a bunch more games coming out this year to be excited for.

To be honest this is exactly how I thought the game would turn out to be. Basically Minecraft with a few other games thrown in. I'll admit that the technology to render so many planets is unbelievable and can be used for so many other games from now on. However, this is not a game I'd enjoy past the first couple of hours.
Just a personal opinion.
