Yeah I saw this. If you go to download their new Anti-Spyware (which they bought completed from another company) app you can elect to have the Website check you for compliance.
Well, it is their software, and they have every right to control its distribution.

All software has bugs, but I have found each succeeding version of Windows to be an improvement over the last. *shrug*

THey will continue to allow automatic updates for the critical stuff, in what they call a balance between controlling their product and security.

Dave, IE usage is over 90% I don't deny Firefox has gathered about 5% of Internet users (it's my browser of choice), but they have a ways to go before Microsoft goes out of business. :) I don't think Gates is the AntiChrist some make him out to be either. He happens to be a formidable businessman who had luck and timing on his side. Besides, he just gave a billion bucks to immunize children. ;)

For the average user Linux is a long way from taking over from Windows. I started using it a half dozen years ago and quite honestly it has changed very little in terms of user friendliness, intuitiveness, for the average user.

Unix/Linux on their own out of the box are not very user friendly to the novice.

Granted there are some tools out there that slap a decent UI on the OS.
I played around with KDE on RedHat and preferred doing my development in pure C++ on a Windows box with a UI that I was more comfortable with. Productivity increased.
There are some alternate lifestyles out there which will have state otherwise. It boils down to what you feel most comfortable with.

However, with a major majority of companies using some version of Windows, a new user will be intimidated by a nX box coming on line. Also, if they have problems with it, most PC shops will not be able to support you, due to the number of different flavors.

nX may be exploding but a doubling from 1K to 2K (100%) does not equate to an increase from 1M to 1.01M platforms. (1%) (numbers are example only)

I love it when people want MS to provide support for a stolen product. I cant steal a car from a dealership then demand a oil change every 3000 miles.

FYI, this only affects non-critical updates; every computer regardless of license still gets all the critical ones.

And expect this to be cracked within one week of release.

Kthxbye

What I do not understand is, MS says they have lost billions in the last 10 years due to pirated copies of Windows.

Do they really think the ppl who run those pirated copies will run out and spend money for an authentic version? Give me a break. They run Pirated copies for a reason. If MS stops it, then they will just move to another way of getting it to work for free.

IMO MS hasn't lost any money. I see it this way, that money they have "lost" was never in their hands in the first place for them to lose. How can you lose something you have never had to begin with?

Falls right in line with the Music Industry. I used to purchase Metallica CD's the day they were released, but after all that crap a couple years ago with the lawsuits etc.... I vowed to never purchase another Metallica CD EVER. I can understand they want to make money (Don't we all), but how can you say you have lost so much due to piracy, not even sure that if the piracted copy was not there that the pirates would go out and buy a copy legally.....

Example: I am walking down the road one day and pass an orange tree. I say 'hmmm an orange sure would taste good right now' I would walk up and pick one, not run to the store and buy one.

MS Windows is the greatest desktop OS for a simple reason - it's compatible with practically every hardware device and is very easy to use. Just plug in and/or install the device/hardware and it works. I really do admire Bill Gates - he started a multi-billion dollar company out of nothing. Talk about living the American Dream - he started his idea in high school, dropped out of college, and is now one of the richest people on earth. Bill Gates and Microsoft illustrates the kind of greatness that can only be achieve in the capitalist American environment.

The music industry had every right to crack down on illegal mp3's. In I was in college about 5 years ago people never ever bothered buying music anymore because they could get any song for free. I know for a fact they would have bought some of that music on CD's if they had not the opportunity to steal it with so little chance of getting caught.

And, yes people will buy legal versions of windows. Unix doesn't run all your favorite video games. Nuff said.

Your orange tree sample is completely retarded. Maybe if that Orange tree had a sign out saying "private property, do not touch." Otherwise, picking it is completely legal and not realed at all to the topic.

I guess "nothing" these days, is being born in the richest family in Seattle (his grandfather owned a freken BANK), is going to an elite "high school" which costs more than you make in a year, then harvard which you could'nt get in with an extra 100 IQ points, then getting 500K of "seed" money from mom and dad, and mom was on B.O.D. of red cross, as was CEO of IBM, who "gave" Bill his exlcusive contract.

If you knew anything about MS history, you'd know it was Paul Allen who was the rags to riches story and the "idea" man. Bill was the money man, contact man and manager.

I only knew that bill gates was a harvard drop out, but what you say makes sense and sounds really interesting. Do you have any links/articles/books that tell the ms history?

As for this, I don't really care either way. M$ makes most of its OS money from corporate and OEM licenses i.e. dell and hp and large institutions that have to upgrade. so, screw them. I'm not gonna defend piracy, though.

I don't have any links (I think I saw it in a Dateline or something :p) but Zebo is right on about Gates's background. He still is a very impressive business figure but doesn't fall into the rags to riches category.

How to become as rich as Bill Gates

As far as priacy?

I believe that you alone are responsible for your happiness and one should do what they want to achive it. If that includes stealing software, fine, but be prepared to pay price as the powers that be have faught for the right for the state to incarserate you for it. As for if it's right or wrong? I don't even know what the hell that means unless you're applying traditional moral doctrine to your position.
