Dave, IE usage is over 90% I don't deny Firefox has gathered about 5% of Internet users (it's my browser of choice), but they have a ways to go before Microsoft goes out of business.I don't think Gates is the AntiChrist some make him out to be either. He happens to be a formidable businessman who had luck and timing on his side. Besides, he just gave a billion bucks to immunize children.

For the average user Linux is a long way from taking over from Windows. I started using it a half dozen years ago and quite honestly it has changed very little in terms of user friendliness, intuitiveness, for the average user.

MS Windows is the greatest desktop OS for a simple reason - it's compatible with practically every hardware device and is very easy to use. Just plug in and/or install the device/hardware and it works. I really do admire Bill Gates - he started a multi-billion dollar company out of nothing. Talk about living the American Dream - he started his idea in high school, dropped out of college, and is now one of the richest people on earth. Bill Gates and Microsoft illustrates the kind of greatness that can only be achieve in the capitalist American environment.

What I do not understand is, MS says they have lost billions in the last 10 years due to pirated copies of Windows.
Do they really think the ppl who run those pirated copies will run out and spend money for an authentic version? Give me a break. They run Pirated copies for a reason. If MS stops it, then they will just move to another way of getting it to work for free.
IMO MS hasn't lost any money. I see it this way, that money they have "lost" was never in their hands in the first place for them to lose. How can you lose something you have never had to begin with?
Falls right in line with the Music Industry. I used to purchase Metallica CD's the day they were released, but after all that crap a couple years ago with the lawsuits etc.... I vowed to never purchase another Metallica CD EVER. I can understand they want to make money (Don't we all), but how can you say you have lost so much due to piracy, not even sure that if the piracted copy was not there that the pirates would go out and buy a copy legally.....
Example: I am walking down the road one day and pass an orange tree. I say 'hmmm an orange sure would taste good right now' I would walk up and pick one, not run to the store and buy one.
(Stepping down off my soapbox now)

Exactly. That is why it won't overtake or even begin to compete with Windows.
In other news:
MS profits are up. Yeah...they'reeallllly hurting.

I guess "nothing" these days, is being born in the richest family in Seattle (his grandfather owned a freken BANK), is going to an elite "high school" which costs more than you make in a year, then harvard which you could'nt get in with an extra 100 IQ points, then getting 500K of "seed" money from mom and dad, and mom was on B.O.D. of red cross, as was CEO of IBM, who "gave" Bill his exlcusive contract.
If you knew anything about MS history, you'd know it was Paul Allen who was the rags to riches story and the "idea" man. Bill was the money man, contact man and manager.

I only knew that bill gates was a harvard drop out, but what you say makes sense and sounds really interesting. Do you have any links/articles/books that tell the ms history?
As for this, I don't really care either way. M$ makes most of its OS money from corporate and OEM licenses i.e. dell and hp and large institutions that have to upgrade. so, screw them. I'm not gonna defend piracy, though.

Sure
How to become as rich as Bill Gates
As far as priacy?
I believe that you alone are responsible for your happiness and one should do what they want to achive it. If that includes stealing software, fine, but be prepared to pay price as the powers that be have faught for the right for the state to incarserate you for it. As for if it's right or wrong? I don't even know what the hell that means unless you're applying traditional moral doctrine to your position.
