I think this is video card related since we certainly care about customizing our settings.

RAGE: I took the opportunity and looked at the options menu. There were no graphic options beside resolution, brightness, anti-aliasing and GPU transcoding. Is this a limitation of the test version?

This is a feature of the id Tech 5. The Engine automatically adjusts to your hardware to ensure the best performance and graphics the hardware can provide.

For example: You have a video card with 512MB VRAM, 4GB of normal RAM and a decent processor. Now the id Tech 5 adjusts the quality of the Level of Detail to the available resources. If you have twice the RAM the engine scales dynamically up to it, improves the textures and objects in the far look sharper and more detailed. At the same time the engines tries to keep running at 60 FPS even though this is not also possible – dependent on the situation.

Has to be some sort of control. What if you have a 2GB G210? Is it that intuitive to know not to crank things up just because it has 2GB of GDDR but a weak GPU?

I'd assume that there's a configuration program similar to what DA:O, or mass effect 2 use.

Judging by IDs history, none of their games had extensive in game graphic options.

what? id's games that I played such as Doom3 and Quake 4 had the same amount of graphics options as a normal game.

this auto detect thing has me worried because those are not usually very accurate.

I remember before the launch of Mass Effect 2 on the Bioware forums, a Bioware graphics programmer stating that the textures in Mass Effect 2 would dynamically scale according to how much VRAM your GPU had.

Turned out to be a bunch of B.S.. The textures in the PC version turned out to be the exact same as the Xbox 360 version.

Though thats not to say that Rage will turn out the same. ID tends to be much more concerned with graphical fidelity than Bioware..

Strikes me as another case of consolitis. I'll definitely wait for some reviews from people here before buying it.

It is retarded not to have any graphics options. Auto-settings is stupid.

Being as Id software is owned by Zenimax though, I'm not surprised.

What settings should idTech 5 have? Do you have any idea how the engine actually renders a scene?

Damn, this doesn't sound right and certainly doesn't sound good.

If gamers want to play with higher/lower graphic fidelity, for whatever reason, they should be able to make that choice with a somewhat sophisticated graphic options suite in the game. This is one of the things I personally like about pc gaming a lot.

Ah well, I will know in <2 hours hopefully and i am very excited for this game.
For tonight.

The only games that don't have graphics options are console ports, and indie games. Any real PC game would have the options. It doesn't matter about the engine. While the engine may not be able to change it in-game, it would at the very least be able to change the settings pre-launch.

So your answer is "no".

OK.

Just FYI, it is confirmed that the game has a launcher program where you configure graphic settings. You configure the graphics from the launcher, not in game.

blackened23, still would like to know who confirmed that because now that the game is out there are indeed no other options other than what I listed according to users.

people are also reporting horrible LOD issues and many cant even get the game to start...

I do appreciate those beta testers for spending 60 bucks...

hop on over to Steam foums and check out the carnage. id has released a freaking turd by the looks of things.

I think it makes a certain amount of sense from the end-user perspective. The average gamer probably doesn't have enough knowledge to know what settings are going to be best for their hardware. They will either just leave everything at default or crank it up to "Ultra" or w/e then get mad that it runs like crap.

But there should definitively be some sort of advanced override.
