If a toddler is behind and close to your car it doesn't matter how many mirrors you have, it's still not visible unless you have a back-up camera.
And my point was that no matter how the mirrors are set up, a car will always have blind spots. Thanks. Go yell at Jules or something.

..but still some assholes like to hang out in my blind spot on the highway, pisses me off.]

If you know they are there, then why is it a problem? I love how in the retouched picture for that product, there are no C pillars or rear window.

Some cars have worse blind spots than others. I don't buy those cars generally unless they are really really good cars. The Lotus Elise, for example, has some of the most useless mirrors and suffers from huge blind spots. The rear view mirror on the Exige is completely useless. And yes, convertibles tend to be even worse, I've owned one and those blind spot mirrors were useful on that car but on most sedans I've never felt them to be necessary.

My car has excellent field of view and with the mirrors adjusted properly I can easily see a vehicle come up from behind, follow it into the side view mirrors and then into my peripheral vision. It also has a backup camera. :p

Do you park your car(s) in a garage? Do you know what is behind your car when you back it out?

Is it physically possible to know what is in your rearward path of motion, for the entire duration of the back-out, without having a spotter behind you?

There is a way to reduce blind spots but as far as I am concerned, it make it harder to back.

Unless you're pulling a trailer, who backs up without physically turning around? If you're in a regular car without nothing blocking rearward view through the back window (e.g. a trailer) and trying to use the mirrors instead of physically turning in the seat you're doing it wrong.

A CHP told me he needed a periscope to see around his Camaro.

Men use mirrors when backing. You ladies can do as you please.

Of course I know what is behind my car when I back out. I turn my head around and look out the back window like you're supposed to. Driving 101 my friend. You needs it. :p

I can't do that. It's uncomfortable and awkard, and I can't operate my clutch or shifter properly.

I have my mirrors adjusted so that I can just barely see the barest sliver of the farthest edge of the taillights in the very edge of my side view mirrors. My rearview is pretty wide already, and I can see edge-to-edge of the entire bed. I have it positioned such that the very top of the tailgate is in the very bottom sliver of the mirror.

I also have the small stick-on fisheyes on each mirror, and have had them for almost two years and never had an issue with them looking bad or falling off.

I can't see any of my own car in my side view mirrors.

Maybe I have to twist more because I wear glasses and can't see out the side

No problem for me with glasses and a stick shift. But I'll grant that for people with back or neck problems mirrors may be necessary instead of turning around.

You're hopeless.

One day I will find you and put a cat behind your rear tires. Are you so dense as to actually think that you can see literally everything around your car when you're backing up?

If there is a euro version of your car, consider seeing if they sell the aspheric mirror glass. It'll give you a much wider field of view.

I can see what is around my car as I walk up to it and get in. That coupled with looking behind me while backing up has managed to serve me well so far. I probably have close to half a million miles driven and I've never backed over a cat or hit a small child playing. Cats are pretty smart, they will generally move out from underneath a car when you start it and put it in gear. Kids playing puts up red flags so I'm always on alert and make sure I can see all of them in my field of view when backing.

I'm still getting used to the backup camera. I do find myself using it more and more but I still turn around and look behind me at least initially when I put it in reverse. I think SUVs should all probably have a backup camera. You can't see jack out the back of those beasts. I don't have an SUV though so I don't have that problem.

Oh and fat load of good mirrors and cameras would be if a cat was resting behind a rear tire. :p

I'd use a dead cat. In any case you wouldn't know either way.

Anyway, I've given up on making you admit that anything more than the basic mirrors is needed to see everything.

I never have figured out why, especially on sports cars, they even NEED an outside mirror any more. Blend a small HD video camera into the sides of the car, with small video monitors on the dashboard. If you make the cameras with a wide-angle lens, you're going to have better vision than you ever would with a mirror, and less time taking your eyes off the road. Plus, the added benefit of the increased aerodynamics!

They already put blind spot mirrors on your car. They're called side mirrors. They're adjustable. They are not for looking at your door handles. Or the sky. Or the pavement.

The More You Know.

p.s. backing up without turning your head should result in immediate driver's license revocation.
