Frankly I think somone in Nintendo's marketing department should be fired over it.
It is quite simply doesn't fit a console gaming system.
Revolution made perfect sense with what the big N wants to do with it, be revolutionary.
Wii, well other than sounding like a small child having fun, seems to have nothing to do with a console.
:thumbsdown::thumbsdown:

Yeah, I just don't understand what was wrong with Revolution.

International corporations need to choose product names that will be effective in all of their demographics. Look at the Chevy Nova (no va), that is the punchline in every international business class.

Didn't Intel originally make the mistake?

Their target market won't care about the name. They're trying to capture a much broader market than just hardcore gamers, something Sony and Microsoft are still mainly aiming toward.

If Nintendo succeeds in doing what they want to do, it will revolutionize gaming. I think they're moving in the right direction and have a better shot at it than anyone. In this regard, I think Wii is a better name than Revolution.

How does having a name that makes no sense help with marketing to non-gamers? The gamers are going to buy it whether it's named revolution, wii, or pig fscker, but do you see some little old lady going into EB and asking for the wii for her grandson for christmas? Revolution is just a more marketable name IMO.

It seems to work in marketing for some reason. Why did Apple call their portable music player something so strange sounding like iPOD? I mean really, wtf is an iPOD? 🙂

We have other popular products with strange names, like drinks called Red Bull.

I think it has more international marketing potential, and grandmothers will buy it, especially because it's a lot cheaper than PS3 or Xbox360. And btw, I thought Xbox360 was kind of a wierd name too, the 360 part.

It's an interesting subject, we'll see what happens...the hardware and games is what really matters.

If the codename wasn't Revolution, would Wii be more acceptable? For instance Peanut Butter...

91TTZ, I wasn't taking you too seriously. That petition just made me a little angry.

vital, does hot mean nobody is bidding?

I think it needs more syllables. Wii just isn't catchy.

I don't like iPods, but at least it's an easy sounding two syllable word.

You know, I don't particularly like the name, but it does have the hilarious side-effect (or perhaps intended effect) of demonstrating just how immature so-called "mature gamers" are.

Sony & MS don't care about just capturing the hardcore gamers, hence their reasonings in turning their systems into media centers, etc. Nintendo can't capture anything but the hardcore fanatics and the kiddies for the simple reason that their consoles have always been about the games first.

I don't see the Revolution making a dent in the console war. Another 3rd place finish for the Big N.

I live in Sweden, and hence Swedish is my native language, and Wii sounds pretty ****** retarded from my point of view as well, English negative associations or not.

The only people pissing(wii-ing?) and moaning about it are the teenagers who are still trying to shake off their childhood and wash away the taste of mothers milk from their mouths. I care about the gaming experience, not the logo, the name or whether <insert celebrity here> owns one.

I don't care if they call it the "crapstain", as long as it plays games and makes them look good what the hell does the name change?

how about iiwii.

Funny that you mention it, that crossed my mind as sounding better simply because of another syllable. Also marketable since people seem to love those 4 player Nintendo games.

I agree they won't make a dent, but it's not because they capture only fanatics and kiddies. Their game library just isn't what it used to be (hasn't been since the SNES, not counting handhelds).

They're running mostly on the steam of their in-house titles and those are pretty limited. Mario, Zelda, Metroid franchises and a large number of multiplayer oriented games (which is what I've found a lot of people are drawn to who are neither hardcore fanatics or kiddies).

Of course that doesn't make much of a game library. The GameCube for most people would seem like a dead system for some time now, with the only really anticipated title left being another in-house Nintendo Zelda game. Whereas owners of a PS2 probably have had more titles trickle in up to and probably some time after the PS3 is released.

iiWii is so much better!!!!

This is Nintendo's marketing working at it's finest. You cannot go 10 feet on the internet without the word "Wii" coming up right now. It's working like a charm getting everyone and their mothers talking about the name, giving the new system total exposure BEFORE E3 even shows.

They also even stated that they released this information before E3 so that people would get over the name by the time E3 came along and would focus on the games and content rather than the silly name.

Again, it's their marketing working 110% how Nintendo wanted it to.

That said, I don't personally like the name at all. But you can't stop the fact that we probably have close to 300 - 400 posts in less than 24 hours regarding the name of this new console (combined of all threads).

Please I hope you are not talking about the Wii ... if you are, you have your facts VERY wrong. There are ssssoooo many 3rd party developers working on games for the new Nintendo system who are excited about the opportunity to do so.

This name does seem pretty lousy.

The first thing that occurs to me when I see it in print is WWII, which isn't a very good association to create.

The second thing that occurs to me is I have no idea how to pronounce it, there are no words in English with a double ii to go on. So I take a guess and end up making sort of a sick moaning sound.
