One trend you forgot to mention is online. If Nintendo doesn't open their eyes and include an online-ready console, they are definitely digging their own grave in the hardware business.

My list of must-have console features:

- Online ready out of the box for atleast broadband. Online is the future of gaming, and with the success of XBOX Live, it shows that gamers want to get online. It makes no sense to me for any future games to not have some sort of online compatibility (single player RPG's excluded).
- Hard drive. The XBOX has shown how handy a hard drive can be. Basically unlimited saves, downloadable content, and music ripping capabilities for your own soundtracks.
- Backwards capability. Not one of these companies are spending the money on R&D for new formats, so there's no reason to not have this feature in. Sony proved this could be done, and done well.
- I think all consoles should adopt Sony's DualShock Controller :D. IMO the best controller ever. The analog sticks are perfect, and the analog for the face and shoulder buttons are GREAT.
- 4 controller ports. Microsoft and Nintendo have this down pat, but where is Sony? Multiplayer adapters should've gone the way of the dodo by now.

That is because the PSX doesn't have 4 controller parts. Kind of putting a new mobo in to your pc without any changes and expecting for it to boot up and work. It mayhave problems. Or sticking something else in to your system that wasn't already their in the first place and having it work iirc.

Hence the 4 port adapters you see for the ps2.

ps2 controllers feel great for me. I guess I'm just so use to it. The GC doesn't look like it would be any good for fighting games. The xbox I haven't spent a lot of time with but it feels alright. Don't like the shape of the 4 buttons though. Ps2 is most comfortable for me.

downloadable xbox stuff to hd. What have you guys d/l that wasn't illegal? Just wondering as I haven't followed stuff on xbox in ages. Can you download new tracks and levels yet? If so in what games. I know that you 'can' but what is actually being used in real life, and not just what can be done.

Koing

There's been a bunch of levels/downloadable content available so far. You can also rip music onto the hard drive and if you care to mod it, rip games directly to your hard drive/turning it into a media center. And what do you mean the 4 port adapters for PS2/PSX not having 4 controller ports? If you're talking about that POS $800 PSX media center then yea, obviously it doesn't have 4 controller ports.

I know the *bunch of levels and downloadable content* but what *specific* stuff is out there? Like say game xxx has 2 extra levels etc. Just out of interest as I haven't heard of this specifically for games. Just that there is content to get.

What about that sealth game for the xbox (can't remember the name but it is out on pc and ps2 now I think, not mgs2 btw)

I'm addressing the other peson I quoted about why the ps2 doesn't have 4 controller ports built in. Reason being is that the psx doesn't have 4 controller ports built in. The psx games would look for the setup of the psx that is to be emulated in the ps2, and if it finds stuff that is *different* it wouldn't load the games up.

Stealth = Splinter Cell I think - there's been 3 add-on levels so far. The downloadable content has been either kind of slow or I haven't paid much attention to it lately though.

That's a pretty crappy reason not to have 4 controller ports though. That should be easily circumvented especially considering there's a lot of different hardware in the PS2 compared to the PS1. Just sounds like an oversight by Sony more than "backwards incompatibility"

Yeah thats the name of the game. Splinter Cell. Oh thats cool 3 extra levels :D

Downloadable content slow. I kind off guess it would be like this. They'd all (everyone that will provide this service not just xbox) be slow off the mark with downloadable conten. Making it sound as if here are plenty of things to download and such.

Yeah and oversight by Sony but who were they to know that the PS1 would be such a success? And steal the top position. And then to make their console backwards compatible. No one has done this before for their systems if I remember. Nes not compatible with SNES, Master System and Sega Mega Drive (Genesis).

But you can't in a pc take everything apart and stick in a new mobo and put it back together and expect it to work can you? You get problems right?

What does the taking a PC apart and sticking in a new mobo and putting it back together have to do with the 4 controller ports?

Simply put it was unacceptable for Sony not to have. The N64 had 4, Dreamcast had 4, GC has 4, XBox has 4. It might not make much of a difference now since the PS2 is winning but I don't get your reasoning.

I agree. It is unacceptable to not have 4 ports.

Koing, for Sony to add 2 more ports to their PS2 would've done nothing to PS1 titles. Possibly a few lines of code, and PS1 titles would pick the extra 2 ports up as an adapter. Simple as that. Although, I do believe when the PS2 specs were first announced long ago, Sony did state the reason for only 2 ports was because of cost. A little history lesson for you gamers out there.......the first couple versions of the PS2 did not have a slot for the future HDD (available in March). Why did the original models not have the slot? Because of backwards compatibility. What, you ask? In order for Sony to achieve the backwards compatibility, they had to put the ACTUAL PS1 hardware in the case, ALONG with the PS2 hardware (the emotion chip, etc. etc.) Eventually, like everything in electronics, Sony evolved and figured out a way to simply emulate the PS1 titles using the PS2 hardware, much like emulators on the PC work, only more advanced. SO, by taking out the PS1 hardware, they were able to put in the HDD slot (it freed up more space inside) AND dropped the price because of the components they simply didn't need anymore. Had Sony figured this out when designing the machine, I could see 4 slots being in there.

Hope you guys learned something tonight ;).

Granted, maybe they've lost their touch on it over the years, but the N64 controller was revolutionary for a console at the time.

If I had to guess, I'd almost say that this is going to have something to do with projection of the game somehow. A second coming of the Virtual Boy, only far more advanced. Hell, I'd like to see a console with a built in LCD projector of some kind.

Nah, this is going to require you to install a chip in your brain. Then you plug into the console, like in the matrix, I swear! The matrix is everywhere, save me Neo!!

I really should go to bed soon...

What the hell? What's the point of that? Seriously? You can buy a used N64 and an assload of games for that price.

The IQue cant possibly be nintendo hardware, notice that the release was in Shanghai, China and not in Japan?
Its probably more along the lines of something like those gameboy flash cartridges, except for the N64.

The I-Que is NOT what Nintendo will be unveiling at E3. The I-Que is the 'console' that is being released in China. No console manufactureres release in China because of the rampant piracy. This is Nintendo's answer to make some money from this territory, and at the same time try to curb piracy enough. The IQue will not be released here in the states as of right now, and HIGHLY doubtful this is related to the E3 showing. Could be, though. You never know.

RagingBITCH the pc mobo was my little analogy for the reason behind it. Why don't all pc mobo manufactures just make it so that you can just buy one and not bother to install things for it so you don't have to format? Well this is more complicated then the psx and the ps2 though. But it isn't as easy as that.

WoodchuckCharlie I'd love to have 4 ports on the ps2 to start with also. But I don't think the problem with that was because it was just a few lines of codes. The 4 port adapters comes in 4 remember and not 2. So the psx would pick up 2 extra ones, and not 4 like it would. That would 'maybe' mess with it. Like I said earlier I'm not 100% sure about this. It is only what I can remember reading a few years back when the ps2 came out. I'm sure if it was that easy to do they would have done it. OR it could have just been a cunning plan to sell more 4 port adapters. Wonder how many have been sold?

It was demoed with the external HDD ages ago also I think. I pesonally th ink it looks better with it on the outside then in the ps2 itself.

I suppose they probably have figured it out now but that would p!ss off a lot of customers probably if they release one with 4 ports. Considering how many ps2 owners out there are with 2 ports!

Hardly played any games that support 4 player though, so it wouldn't bother me that a console has only 2 ports. And don't say "well the developers would release more if they had 4 ports to work with" cos same goes for GC and XBox. Notable exception being 4 player battles in Crash Team Racing for PSX - awesome :D
