May I ask you something? Did you think NIN sucked before this Bush thing happened?

I have every right to not like politics in my music. Anyway, the whole album sucked lyrically politics or not. The music was great but hearing a 40-year-old whine about daddy was too much. Now this.

MTV can do whatever they want. They're a private organization, they can make any rule they want. You don't have to agree with it.

You missed my point...but that's ok..
I missed your edit in my response.
In your post you mentioned that MTV was saying they couldn't play, not them refusing.
Let me clarify: MTV has the right to deny any prop, any person, any hat that they don't like, any earing, and necklace, any ANYTHING that they don't like.
As for my opinion, pleae don't make assumptions.
It just seemed kind of obvious to me that you disagreed with MTV here. If I'm worng, I stand corrected.
Can you explain to me what the problem is with having a picture up in the background of the President?
I can, but that is totally not the point here. MTV has a problem with it, and that's all that matters. They don't like it. They are entitled to make their own rules.
Edit:

Would it be acceptable to perform in front of a picture of the President if you were singing a pro-GWB type song?
You'd have to ask MTV if they like that idea or not. It doesn't matter if I agree or not.

Ok, I think you inadvertantly answered my question in this post. It sounds like you never really liked NIN anyway, so why post this and then say they suck now.

You claim to be anti-political, but you post this now like it changed your view of the band that apparently you never liked in the first place.

So, why may I ask, if you are "anti-political", did this particular story bother you?

I understand what you were, and still saying...I'm not disputing MTV's rights here, although you keep replying to me like I am. I guess we just misuderstood each other.

Anyway, the questions I posted were not for MTV to answer, they were for you. I was asking your opinion. I could care less what MTV thinks...

I was a HUGE NiN fan from the first album. I didn't like With Teeth at all. Now seeing how it's infested with politics I really don't like it, this the topic, "NIN officially suck now". Politics alone did not kill NiN for me. It was sucking now combined with the trendy anti-Bush crap that pushed them over the edge.

I like the new Green Day even though it's polluted with politics, but all together it's a great album. I just skip the songs American Idiot and Holiday.

Anyway, apologies for pissing on a hornets nest. Not my intention to start a political debate. You wont get one out of me anyway.

Okay, I don't like political music. That's just me. As a matter of fact, I don't like bands who get involved in politics even when they're off the stage. Springsteen really pissed me off with what he was doing during the presidential election, and I used to be a big fan. I'm not ever going to deny that they have the right to do it, I just personally don't like it.

Thanks for clarifying that. As for politics in music, you really shouldn't be surprised. I'd argue it's at the lowest point it's been in years nowadays.

Fair enough...thanks for answering.

If I may just ask one question, would your opinion of Springsteen be the same now if he had been doing the same thing for the opposite person?

I guess I am out of touch with the mainstream. Living in NYC I have to put up with anti-Bush rhetoric on a daily basis.

I think so. I like bands because I like their music, not their opinions. I like actors because of their acting not because I like their opinions. Whenever they think they are more than what they are, it pisses me off. These are not elected officials, they can be the biggest idiots around, but they have a talent that people pay to see or hear. Their opinions are just their personal opinions, and they should understand that. If they want to dabble in politics they can run for office.

The difference is really, when you see Johnny Depp in a movie, he's playing a character and acting out someone's (probably non-political) script. When you listen to music by polticial people they usually singing about politics. I love Depp as an actor because if I didn't know anything about his personal life I would not know he's a political nutjob. With music it's all up in your face.

A part of your reply struck me as interesting. You say that their opinions are meaningless...how so. They may be meaningless to you, but I think they are still valid in having one.

I think it's natural for politics to be in music...to varying degrees. If someone really believes in something, and they are now in a position to have large numbers of people listen to what they have to say, it's very easy to see why they might have political messages in their music.

I'm curious why you can't seperate the two in music that you like. I mean, if there is an artist and songs you like, but the policital message bothers you, can't you just ignore it and enjoy the music?

:)

That's fine, but it's not like you have to listen, or even if you do, why does it bother you? It's not like if you listen to too much anti-Bush stuff, all of a sudden you will become a hippy and join a commune.

Can you not understand why music is a natural stage for involving policital opinions? They have the ability to reach large numbers of people that otherwise might not listen to them.

Seems totally natural to me, and it's been that way for a long time. If there is a political message in music I don't agree with, I'll just not listen or ignore the words if the song is good by itself.

Fine. Start listening to nowaday's rap. All they ever talk about is brand name cloth they wear, cars they've got, who they're going to kill, how they are the best in the world, and how they've got all this money but nobody to share with.

I immediately edited that, because I knew you'd jump on me. :) I changed it to "Their opinions are just their opinions, nothing more". :)

No, I can't ignore it. It's what the song stands for and what the band stands for.

Based on your conclusion nobody should be allowed to form a political opinion except for those who plan to run for office.

Who knows why they do, but I trust that most people have a brain of their own and are capable deciding whether or not these opinions are important to them or not.

No, I can't ignore it. It's what the song stands for and what the band stands for.

Well, I guess we just have different positions there...no problem...your opinion isn't "meaningless" to me. ;):p

On that note...Happy Memorial Day!

I don't see how you get that. Anyone can have a political opinion, I just don't have to buy the CD's that they preach their politics on. I am not denying their right to have an opinion, I just don't like when a band or actor preaches their opinion as if someone cares what they think. The reason they have an audience is not because of what they think, but because of their talent. They should realize that. Again, this is just MY opinion, I'm not denying their right to think or preach what they do. I just don't have to agree with it.

Political opnions are their 'talents' as well. Think about all those great artists and how many had political views in their arts. If saying 'war is not right' considered to be extremely political, you've got a serious issue in your brain. Just think about all those men we praise, they were/are political. The reason I like Ali, Picaso, The Doors, Janis Joplin and whoever is because they talked about the society with their talents. Politics are about the current status of society we live, it's something you/we need to think about, otherwise you get brain washed by those politicians and brain washing mass media.
