Would you buy a newly reconditioned "mpn 40k" gen1 for $150-200 if you had an offer?

Looking at getting one for no real good reason, would be great for stargazing , backpacking with my scareycat friends, and animal surveillance on some hunting property.

This is not the seller but they have a link to the old soviet binocs

Hope the person you are stalking isn't a midget, because midgets have nightvision.

Older generation NVG/NVB gave me headaches. If there is a return policy, go for it.

Gen 1 devices are useless. You're better off letting your eyes adjust to the darkness and getting a regular optical scope.

Spend a couple hundred more, and you can get a good gen 3 or 2 night vision on ebay. ie. ITT mariner

Night vision, probably moreso than any other product, is really a case of you get what you pay for.

Would I drop a few hundred on a gen 1 unit? Yeah, I probably would. I'd also get an IR flashlight for it as well.

If you desire to do anything even remotely serious then you need Gen 2 at a minimum. Gen 3, which has a pricetag which actually hurts, is incredible though. Everyone, and I do mean everyone, who has looked through my Gen 3 unit has been stunned at what it can do. This includes older folks and "hippies" that really have no interest in technology or tactical gear. Shit even my wife, who is completely uninterested in things like this, was impressed and amazed by Gen 3 NV.

I would buy Gen 1 as nothing more than a toy and novelty. So if you are comfortable with the price of entry and the realization that its money that is going to a novelty and you will want an IR illuminator to go with it definitely pick one up. If you have any desire for a semi serious piece of gear you almost have to move up to a Gen 2 unit.

that gen 1 is worse than my toy IR ones I bought on clearance

I doubt it.

I've actually used this model before and it's not bad. It appears to be durable as hell and possibly water resistant.

I'd say this in working condition is def. worth over $150. The MPN 40k probably has a $50-75 price premium over the 30k. Mine will be rebuilt as well, so it may actually work better then a well used model.

but yeah I'd say i'm not treating this more seriuosly then a toy

Gen 2 is a big leap up from Gen 1. It's actually usable. I wouldn't bother with Gen 1. If you really want to be a boss, spend the big bucks and get a fused Gen 3 and SWIR imager. I'm not even sure if its commercially available yet, but it is pretty freakin' neat.

You cannot look at stars with night vision. I've used night vision before and I know quite a bit about it and it's not what most people think. Unless you're going to spend the big bucks for Gen 2 or 3, the image is a blurry green fuzz.
