Nice! I just wasted $158.

i do not understand how people do not get this...I mean, I would imagine that a right on red after stopping is pretty universal in the states. I am always dumbfounded when I see a sign that reads "right turn on red after stop". So, now you have tell people? You did pass the written test, right?

Not all streets allow right turns on red. Texas allows right turns on red but still has some streets that don't allow it.
Austin, Tx, North Congress Ave and East 11th at the Captial.

There has been a national effort to revise signals for signalized left turns. As the OP, most people do not come to a come to a complete stop when turning left on a blinking red light.

Now, more and more jurisdictions are installing a signal with a blinking yellow light for unprotected left turns.

Sez the guy from Tex-Ass...a place that IS a third world country.

Oh pulhease. Both states have their ups and downs. You seem to forget how many shit towns there are here.
The one thing I like about our area is the synced lights for right turns. Green arrows FTW.

And he lives in one of those shit towns too. :D

But hey, the meth is cheap there.

Here in NJ I have not yet seen any blinking red or blinking yellow for left turns. In most areas here, it is left only on the green arrow. Right turns on red require a full stop first and some intersections (usually very high traffic roads) prohibit right on red altogether.

I'm not sure if I should start a new thread, but this has me thinking. I live up here in Alaska where the roads are most times covered in a little snow or ice in the winter. I haven't gotten any stop-related tickets yet (knock on wood), but I'm always wondering and think it's just a matter of time.

Light turns yellow and you have maybe 4-5 car lengths @ 35 - 40mph. Slamming on breaks is a bad idea, and there's a good chance you'll get caught in the intersection when the light turns red. Some newer lights have a countdown timer which makes it easier to decide beforehand, but when lights don't have a countdown, do you chance it and just go through it, or try to stop?

Now stopping for right turns-on-red. I'm used to remembering, "Make sure wheels stop spinning" to be considered an actual stop, but here you can slide a foot or two. What would a police officer think in that situation?

Haha...

My wife got one months back and I remember watching it and thinking as the video started that maybe she did a half stop.. nope.

All 3 deserve tickets really. BUT... I'm stringently against red light cameras which equate to taxation without representation.

If a cop isn't there in person, I think it's BS. I'd be outraged about implementation of speeding cameras. I like doing 80-90 if I want and knowing I most likely won't get pulled over or ticketed.

wow not a single complete stop. Lots of red light cameras here now - love that people are actually obeying traffic laws. Well, other than speeding of course. Speeding is ok as long as it's reasonable.

They have speeding cameras here too. Don't worry they are downhill in 25mph zones like you would expect for maximum fines.

ONLY $158? Hell, that's dirt cheap.

Here, a red light violation will cost you about $400.

(plus the counties may tack on additional fees)

Insurance gets raped too. I think that rolling stop was 3 points on my license. When you're young, that drives insurance up by about $100/year.
I can understand the insurance company's side. The kid who wrote off my car just happened to be running a stop sign. That's one of them laws where ignoring it could cost them thousands of dollars.

Dude...meth is never cheap.
Isn't it the cheapest drug out there? It's not a plant like weed, and it doesn't need to be imported like cocaine. It's made from dirt cheap chemicals one can find in a hardware store. That's arguably why its users are the lowest of the low. The guy on cocaine might be a lawyer, the guy on weed is a college student, the guy on meth is so poor that he's almost homeless.

It's good that they gave you a fine.
It's illegal for a reason: what if a motorbike appeared from behind that truck and you didn't see him?

also you have to create rules and road signs so that they work in any situation, you can't make them flexible.

Cheaper in initial price? Yes...cheaper in the long run? Not hardly. The toll on the life of the meth user is VERY high.

A few years ago, it was the bikers who had the meth labs...nowadays, it's the Mexican cartels.
I'm always happy as hell to see them get taken down. Back in the day, I got called out on several HAZMAT cleanups for meth labs and discarded meth by-products. (I made good money on the stuff...but it's a PITA to deal with for the various city/county/state agencies who get stuck with the costs)

While the chance of an accident is indeed quite low, there is a lot to be said for consistent road rules. Red light = stop first, everyone knows that and we can make decisions around the fact that most of the time people obey it (or at least pay enough lip service so that the stop is close enough to a stop. Though looking at those 3 people in a row just rolling on through, I'm not sure the lip service was even paid).

But even beyond that, I assume that there is some indication that this intersection has a red light camera, right? In which case it should be in the driver's best financial interests to come to a complete stop regardless of any other factors just to avoid any fines.

I know that I always come to a COMPLETE stop at any red light camera intersection. I have nothing morally against careful, slow, rolling of the turn on red. But always remember that cars are not the only things on the road, and things off the road (pedestrians, etc) can go on the road, so be careful. Hard to unsquish a squished person.

You have stated a problem. Here is the solution. The new Escort Radar Detector has built in an updatable Red Light Camera Database. When you get 1000 feet of a Red Light Camera, it will warn you, and then warn you again as you get closer. It has certainly saved me four or five times just in 2011. You also have the option of getting special high gloss spray for your license plate. It is undetectable by the normal eye, but to a camera, it causes the picture to overdevelop leaving just a glare spot. Escort also has their new Escort Live, which integrates GPS with your smart phone to warn of quickly setup radar traps. It works on the principal of: when your detector finds a radar trap, via blue tooth to your smart phone, then through the Escort app. it warns other drivers in that GPS location of the radar trap. Escort live is very new (this month) and until enough users are on the grid, it won’t be very helpful, but it is growing. I ordered my Bluetooth cable for my 9500ix over a month ago, and still have not received it (backordered). Years ago, I was easy picking for 2 or 3 tickets a year. Since 2009, I have not received even one ticket. Can’t tell you exactly what I did with the extra money, but it does cause a smile from cheek - too - cheek.

It's easier and cheaper to just stop at the red lights...
