NHL, union have tentative agreement

Isn't that funny that progress gets made when Bettman and Fehr aren't involved?

What's weird is that I have been following this pretty closely throughout the process. Waiting, hoping, for a season. Now that we have it I find that I'm not as excited as I expected. Maybe it's because I had already thrown in the towel and expected another lost year.

Ultimately, I think folks with feelings like mine represent the real problem for the NHL now: If a die hard like me can wake up to this news and find they just don't care then that's some pretty serious damage to your brand.

This. Wife told me this morning...i paused for a second and then moved on. Although I suppose I'm not a lifelong die-hard yet, I've pumped thousands into the NHL and it was a "meh" moment for me.

Yeah I'm definitely not lifelong die hard, I guess I'm about as die hard as a fan of the Preds can be. I do have season tickets. I do enjoy going to the games. I do also enjoy meeting Blackhawks fans when they invade our arena. 🙂

I feel somewhat the same.

This will probably be the year the Maple Leafs win the cup....and people will say it doesn't count because of the shortened season....lol

Yeah... I'm finding it really hard to care. They let this drag out way too long, and the season is basically half over at this point.

It's too bad hockey fans can't come down in numbers like Bears fans and drink your town dry. Maybe in 2014 I'll plan a roadtrip and come down there and harass you all game.

yeah same.

I been getting my hockey fix with a local team called the ice hogs. now they said the NHL is perhaps starting my ability to care is low.

I'm going to have to head to Chicago for a game at some point. I think the reason we get invaded is because it's an easy trip and people have learned that Nashville is a fun town to visit for a sporting event. The arena is downtown so you don't even have to drive from your hotel to the arena, to the bars, etc. It's all there.

Yup, exactly. They can try and lure me back with free CI or GC this season, but that's about the only way.

It's actually kind of a shame, because a heavily shortened reg season means the games actually count. It could actually be exciting. But I'm personally not that excited, and I'm guessing the next call I get from a premium ticket rep will be the last unless the league takes some serious steps to make things right for the fans.

I'm amazed they actually got it done.

I had given up on a season long ago.

WOOOOOOOOHOOOOOO.

And fuck you NHL and NHLPA for causing half a season to be wasted. 😡

I would have really loved to see the NHL fold. Or for that matter it would be nice to see any one of the major sports leagues get totally destroyed by a strike. Let some of these assholes go out and get real jobs and see if the rest keep whining about how tough things are for them.

I know it's frustrating because all we look at are the 'rich' players (not many of the players are actually rich) and the 'rich' owners (ok all of these guys are rich). But plenty of others rely upon these sports in order to make a living. It's kind of like saying you hope a manufacturing plant in your town closes down because it would serve them right for doing something you don't like. What about their suppliers? Their suppliers suppliers? The local businesses that are only alive because of the presence of that plant, etc.

Right, right, the entire economy will unravel because of the NHL folding. It's not the freaking US auto industry, it's the NH-freaking-L. How many people do you really think they keep employed?

Never said the entire economy would unravel. I also never compared it to the entire US auto industry, just one local manufacturing facility. But there would be collateral damage regardless. Some local economies would be hurt for sure. And your op wasn't NHL specific.

Just think of the local bars that are effected by it and the employees of the club that arent the players. The sports merchandise companies/stores and all of the suppliers for those businesses. They don't make the NHL any more money, but they employ hundreds if not thousands of people per market. All of those jobs are affected in some fashion, either through cutback in hours or outright elimination. It's not just the players at were missing a paycheck.

And again, how many people do you think an NHL franchise employs? An NHL franchise folding would have as much impact on the community as a single Wal-Mart or large supermarket shutting down. It's a blip. Collateral damage? Really? Yeah, because the economy of New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, Los Angeles or Chicago could not possibly absorb the loss of a few peanut vendors who work 40 games a year. Their spending power would impact yacht sales and then the yacht dealers would not be able to support the Ferrari dealers.

I'm not sure you fully understand the economy at all, NHL related or not, nor do you understand the point we are trying to make to you. But keep putting words in our mouths and making assumptions, it's working out for you. Really, it is.

A lot actually, especially in the bar & restaurant industry. The lockout has hurt a lot of small businesses who depend on hockey to attract patrons. A lot of the sports bars around Toronto are hurting bad this season. It's the only way most fans can go see games in a communal setting, since ticket prices are too damn high. There's a lot of greed in the NHL.

True hockey fans would be wise to boycott the first games back. One buddy of mine who's in sports broadcasting said fans should stand and turn their backs to the ice for the first minute of play. Send the message that this behavious is unprofessional and unacceptable.
