What's weird is that I have been following this pretty closely throughout the process. Waiting, hoping, for a season. Now that we have it I find that I'm not as excited as I expected. Maybe it's because I had already thrown in the towel and expected another lost year.
Ultimately, I think folks with feelings like mine represent the real problem for the NHL now: If a die hard like me can wake up to this news and find they just don't care then that's some pretty serious damage to your brand.
This. Wife told me this morning...i paused for a second and then moved on. Although I suppose I'm not a lifelong die-hard yet, I've pumped thousands into the NHL and it was a "meh" moment for me.

Yeah I'm definitely not lifelong die hard, I guess I'm about as die hard as a fan of the Preds can be. I do have season tickets. I do enjoy going to the games. I do also enjoy meeting Blackhawks fans when they invade our arena. 🙂

It's too bad hockey fans can't come down in numbers like Bears fans and drink your town dry. Maybe in 2014 I'll plan a roadtrip and come down there and harass you all game.

I would have really loved to see the NHL fold. Or for that matter it would be nice to see any one of the major sports leagues get totally destroyed by a strike. Let some of these assholes go out and get real jobs and see if the rest keep whining about how tough things are for them.
I know it's frustrating because all we look at are the 'rich' players (not many of the players are actually rich) and the 'rich' owners (ok all of these guys are rich). But plenty of others rely upon these sports in order to make a living. It's kind of like saying you hope a manufacturing plant in your town closes down because it would serve them right for doing something you don't like. What about their suppliers? Their suppliers suppliers? The local businesses that are only alive because of the presence of that plant, etc.
Right, right, the entire economy will unravel because of the NHL folding. It's not the freaking US auto industry, it's the NH-freaking-L. How many people do you really think they keep employed?
Never said the entire economy would unravel. I also never compared it to the entire US auto industry, just one local manufacturing facility. But there would be collateral damage regardless. Some local economies would be hurt for sure. And your op wasn't NHL specific.

And again, how many people do you think an NHL franchise employs? An NHL franchise folding would have as much impact on the community as a single Wal-Mart or large supermarket shutting down. It's a blip. Collateral damage? Really? Yeah, because the economy of New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, Los Angeles or Chicago could not possibly absorb the loss of a few peanut vendors who work 40 games a year. Their spending power would impact yacht sales and then the yacht dealers would not be able to support the Ferrari dealers.
