He's not a hockey guy, he came from the NBA and had no prior experience in hockey.

He was the commissioner who presided over two lockouts, one of which resulted in an entire season canceled.

He moved Canadian teams to the US and tried to force hockey to work in the southern US where there isn't much interest, meanwhile Canadian cities are begging for teams.

On the plus side, league revenue has increased substantially during his tenure.

so what's wrong with trying to expand your league's influence?

A lot of those southern teams are actually very popular, profitable, and successful.

Admittedly, I scoffed when the Caines showed up in my hometown (we got a new bball arena out of it--which I also handidly despised), but they managed to be quite popular and a I rather enjoyed going to those games.

I used to be one of those uppity northerners who thought Hockey anywhere south of St Louis was blasphemy. Then I came to my senses while floating in a pool in Tampa.

While visiting my wifes grandparents, who retired retired down there after being native Detroiters their whole lives. I realized their entire retirement sub (115 houses) was made up of people from Michigan and Windsor. The next sub over was all Minnesota peeps. Another one nearby was Maine. There was a surprising number of retired canadians down there. And of course you'll find a shit ton of New Yorkers all over Florida. Guess what all these people have in common? They were used to cheering for a local hockey team their whole lives. There is PLENTY of interest for hockey in a place like Tampa.

It's not just retirees either. Places like Dallas, LA, have tons of guys who took the Ford or GM buyouts and moved to start a new career. Ever wonder why you can see a sea of red in any arena in the US? Because that mass exodus from Michigan over the past decade has spread the hard core US hockey fans all over.

Remember, at one point everyone thought it was silly to put a baseball team out west. But they forgot that everyone in LA had roots back east. The LA Dodgers were a smashing success. And I would say the west coast is doing quite well in baseball these days.

Still the best thing about the finals ...

Actually, "rocking the red" in the south = Caps territory. 😉 But seriously, when were the Capitals ever relevant until Leonosis bought that team and invested in it? We are seeing the same in many other southern cities such as Tampa (great management/marketing), Nashville, Dallas, Carolina. The only teams that aren't doing well were now defunct Atlanta, Florida, and Phoenix. I think those teams really just need new management (i.e. someone who gives a sht and is willing to spend money to make money) like the Capitals and their franchises would be successes.

yeah, i didnt know what to expect and wasnt a hockey fan at the time...but im glad theyre here. management could be better, but the fan base is pretty decent. lots of imports from here, there and everywhere and many people root for the hurricanes until their original home team comes to town.

if youre going to live here long enough, id rather you support the team all the time, but whatever. the atmosphere is rarely bad with visiting teams, and the all star event had a really great turnout.

/also, tailgating for hockey is a good time.
//maybe they wont suck balls this year

holy crap the awards show is painful to watch.

That and the debabcle that was the stupid comic book hockey whatever that was, at the all star game. Seriously, who is coming up with this junk? The NHL could hire a little league cheerleader to do better publicity
