well, all my picks in the West made it through except Vancouver so far. In the East, Boston/Philly/Pitt can still take it. It's really looking like a Cup champ will come out of the West unless it's the Caps from the East.

The Hawks being my first favorite sports team tonight feels like one of the most significant sporting nights of my life, as far as being a fan goes.

If the Hawks win I'll remember it forever, even if they don't win the cup (which I'm pretty sure they won't; many of their players look too tired at times from being overplayed).

If they lose, the tremendous effort to tie up the series will soon fade from memory.

I'll be rooting for Chicago tonight to become the 4th team in history to pull it off. If Vancouver wins, well they were supposed to.

It would honestly be impressive if either of these teams went on to win the Cup after such a brutal series. The Hawks would have to overcome impossible odds (come back from 0-3 only done 3 times in 100 yrs, back to back champ which was 12 yrs ago, win Cup after first round 7 game series was 17 years ago). Vancouver would have to do it with banged up goalies and mental fatigue.

Because the league decided there wasn't intent to injure. If Captain Chara isn't getting suspended for shoving MaxPax's face into the stanchion (and breaking vertebrae), then Captain Richards sure as hell isn't getting time off for pushing a guy into the boards where the kid was ok. This is exactly what I was saying on the Torres hit, he could have shoved Seabrook instead of going for the headshot and doing permanent concussion damage. Connolly isn't going to have permanent damage because Richards didn't push him that hard into the boards. Richards is an extremely physical player who isn't known for cheapshots, and I don't think there was intent on that play. He is always shoving people into the boards, that's his style of play. Keep in mind that Richards has never been suspended.

Agreed. It was a dirty hit, but there was no intent to injure and it wasn't a head shot... The damage was particularly bad because Connolly put his head down.

Whew, Sharks move on after a tough series with the Kings!

The 4 minute double minor to Thornton was bad, especially after he'd been high sticked earlier in the game. It wasn't his fault the Kings player lifted his stick into his teammate's face. What was really bad was the refs giving the Sharks a 5 minute major at the end of the 3rd period. I think it should have been a 2 minute penalty at most, if any.

Yeah, that's what I was bitching about here:

And the 5 minute major was BS too, it seemed like the refs were trying to make it a 7 game series.

This, please. I don't want more 10:30 games in San Jose.

That never happened last year.

Because the NHL is inconsistent with its punishment.

Buffalo now has to go in game 7 arguably without its best shot blocker and penalty killer this series, as well as a center, a position Buffalo was already lacking in without Hecht and Roy in the lineup, all because of a dirty hit.

Fortunately, Roy will be playing tonight.

The Hockey News' Ken Campbell put it pretty well:
Did we really expect the league to suspend the captain of the Philadelphia Flyers for a Game 7, even if his egregious hit from behind on Tim Connolly deserved just that? How that penalty was not a major and a game misconduct boggles the mind and what made it even more distasteful was the fact Richards went on to assist both the tying and winning goals at a time when he shouldn’t have even been on the ice.

He shouldn’t be on the ice for Game 7, either, but we expected the league wouldn’t act because, well, the NHL generally lacks the fortitude to make a decision of that magnitude. Bickell would also likely have played in Game 7 if he wasn't injured because, after all, the area behind the net is now known as a “hitting area,” which would undoubtedly have been extended to “a hitting area where a guy can leave his feet and drill a guy’s head,” just for this time.

Well, NHL management probably wants teams with large markets and a large fanbase advancing in the playoffs because they get more money. The Kings have a larger market than San Jose, Chicago has a larger market than Vancouver, etc.

It happens in the NBA too.

Richards' hit was not suspendable. There needs to be some accountability with the players themselves. It's the same guys who seem to get caught with their heads down, and I think it's because they think they won't get hit because it'll be whistled and a suspension. That's a bunch of shit. Keep your fucking head up, especially if you're made of glass and known to take concussions. It's always the same fucking guys. If they can't handle the fundamentals, like skating with your head up, then they should retire and spare their own health.

Connolly made a choice. He saw Richards coming, turned, and put his head down. Richards didn't even shove him that hard. Hell, the ref wasn't even going to put his arm up until he saw Connolly stay down.

I don't want to see guys get hurt, but not every concussion is the result of a cheap shot. The safety aspect has to go both ways.

And look at that. Danny Briere gets called for boarding a guy twice his size, and he hit him shoulder to shoulder. Whistle because the guy stayed down.

The Flyers should flop around too.

Yeah that penalty was an absolute joke, Briere coughed on him.

What happened in the Bruins game? I just got home to see a double power play for Montreal, and heard something about Lucic ejected.
