I'm loving how wide open the AFC looks, things don't appear to be set in stone like they might have before week 1 was finished.
AFC East:
Of course with Brady out (unfortunate, because a major goal of any team playing them this year was to beat them at full strength) this leaves the division wide open...and while the other 3 teams might have been pathetic last year, all 3 have made some pretty significant moves to improve for this year. Without Brady I could see the Jets or Bills winning this division as the Jets made moves to morph their team with a "win now" mentality and a lot of the pieces came together to make that happen. Favre isn't the only move they've made (even though it might seem like it), however he is the icing on the cake.
Then there's the Bills who look like they have a solid defense, an offense that shouldn't hurt them, and they look like they could be pioneering something special with that ridiculous special teams they've cooked up - the don't just have one superstar return specialist - they have several. I will say that I've never been that much of a fan of it, because you simply can't count on it when you need it like you can a solid offense or even defense, but like I said, this could be something we really haven't seen before from a team...
AFC South:
Indy looked terrible at home against what was supposed to be a mediocre Bears team. Rusty and injury plagued, a once former favorite could struggle a lot...the good news for them is that this heavy weight division of last season appears to be far from flawless this year.
The Jags dropped a game to Tennessee in a performance uncharacteristic of a true Superbowl contender. I don't like Garrard like so many others...people praise him for his "efficient/effective" play but to me that's just a nice dressing for "game manager" as opposed to "game winner". They've also taken some key hits on their O-line which could really ruin their "just good enough offense" for the rest of the season and keep them out of contention despite a defensive strength.
Tennessee - similar situation to the Jags, although even worse IMO (despite beating the Jags)...Vince Young has looked terrible as an NFL QB, and I don't see any signs of him getting better any time soon. As gimmicky as it is, maybe if they let/encouraged him to run around far more often they'd do better, but again, the QB really is the most important position in football and neither the Jags nor Titans are in great/good shape here.
AFC West:
Chargers, like the Colts, also dropped a game they should have won, although they weren't completely out of it like the Colts were. However I've never been all too impressed with their team like so many analysts have been and still are. I just don't get it - where's all their awesome tallent? Their best defensive player is playing through an injury and potentially gambling his career. Their best RB is probably past his peak (and they gave up Turner to the Falcons, who could possibly have a better year then LT...). And their QB, again - that all important position, hasn't really proven himself as an upper echelon QB (the other two major QBs from his draft class, Ben and Eli, have both already won a Superbowl, and yet the Chargers have consistently been lauded more so than the Steelers or Giants in that time...)
Anyways, they're also fortunate that they look like they could be in one of the least contested divisions in the conference with the Chiefs and Raiders both most likely falling flat yet again...however the Broncos could be something of a surprise, I could see them potentially giving the Chargers a run for the division...
AFC North:
I could be wrong about the West being the least contested division. We'll know more after next week with the Steelers @ Browns. But thus far we have the Ravens in rebuilding mode, the Bengals looking like the Bungles of old, and the Browns falling flat now that they have a tough schedule. I never bought into the Browns hype - their 10-6 record last season was a fluke, the result of having one of the absolute easiest schedules possible, playing only 4 games against teams with winning records (losing 3), of which two of those games were against the Steelers, both losses.
The Steelers' D is looking scary good and their offense was incredibly efficient in marching down the field on their way to scoring 5 TDs through 3 quarters before throwing in their backups for the entire 4th quarter. While their O-line played well in this first and only game, it has been seen as one of their few potential weaknesses...of which if they have solved this problem, they should definitely be a force to be reckoned with and I'm surprised more haven't picked up on them as a contender.
