You know, with everyone constantly talking about how Moss draws coverage away from other receivers, you'd think other teams would have figured that out in their defensive schemes. Moss really isn't as good as everyone says, he doesn't really try anymore. Even if he's only single covered.
I think you're forgetting just how good he was (and still is). Even at his "advanced age," Randy is still faster than most defensive backs. His accelerating is incredibly deceptive due to his long legs. Once he is in single coverage, it's pretty much game over. He is tall, knows how to read the ball, and has perfected the art of keeping the ball location a mystery to his defender until the last second.
His speed has certainly declined a little bit, as has his jumping ability, but only Megatron right now is anything close to what Randy CAN be. Teams take advantage of his attitude. They know that if they bring safety help over the top, he'll get discouraged.
He doesn't like being a decoy... he wants to be THE offensive weapon.
Look at last weekend's game. The Pats had a safety rolled over the top of him the entire time. When he ran routes near the goal line, he was chipped at the line, picked up by a DB and then ran into at least one of the safeties. The
second the Patriots showed single coverage on Randy, Favre capitalized and Brandon Meriweather, the unfortunate soul left covering Moss, did the right then and tried to simply take him out.
Leaving Moss in single coverage is basically giving the other team a long completion or a touchdown. Teams double him because they would rather force the offense to successfully execute eleven or twelve 80% success-rate plays than one or two 40% bombs to Randy. The ONLY guy that ever seemed to give Moss trouble in single coverage was Revis.
Sorry, but you can't downplay Moss's abilities. He's one of the most physically gifted guys to ever play the position and, if he had a better head on his shoulders, he would own every single solitary receiving record.
My bet, though, is that Randy Moss is pretty much done in the NFL. I think he will be let go from the Titans in a matter of weeks or just sit out this season because of dissatisfaction with his new team. I just don't think he has the mindset to play any more.
I think he blew his chance at another big contract, but he isn't done. He's going to follow the TO route -- successively smaller one-year deals to keep him honest until his playmaking abilities are basically gone.
I think he'll report to the Titans, if only because he knows he needs to perform to have a job next year.
