NFL player pulled over outside hospital while rushing to be with dying relative

Hmm I don't really know what to say about this except it's absolutely brutal, and Ryan Moats the NFL player did everything he could in a situation of panic like this..obviously it's cops like these that make the headlines and make it seem like it's the "norm", but based on my experiences there are countless great cops for every one of these ones.

Cop needed to make his ticket quota. You can't blame him for doing his job.

EDIT: And honestly - How is an officer supposed to know for sure that someone is dying? I am sure they hear crap like that all the time.

So you are saying the cop shouldn't have pulled him over, or should have been more polite? Because I think the NFL player should have kept his mouth shut and moved on. Its his fault.

You can say what you want, but even when the hospital staff came out to tell the officer, he still didn't give a shit.

You might actually bother to read the article before making utterly uninformed comments.

Hospital security guards arrived and told Powell that the Moatses? relative really was upstairs dying.

Powell spent several minutes inside his squad car, in part to check Moats for outstanding warrants. He found none.

Another hospital staffer came out and spoke with a Plano police officer who had arrived.

?Hey, that?s the nurse,? the Plano officer told Powell. ?She said that the mom?s dying right now, and she?s wanting to know if they can get him up there before she dies.?

?All right,? Powell replied. ?I?m almost done.?

As Moats signed the ticket, Powell continued his lecture.

So if a wanted murderer was pulled over, they should let him go see his dying relative and possibly escape and not run the background check while he has the person in front of him pulled over?

Cops are people too, some of them are aholes. Actually alot of them are aholes. 😉 But maybe that has to do with them dealing with human scum 24x7. Sure the officer could have been more polite, but this doesnt need to be in the news.

Do you realize how often cops probably hear the dying family member excuse when they pull somebody over for speeding? It's never a good idea to get out of the car after you've been pulled over. The cop was kind of a dick about it, but, routine traffic stops can sometimes end up in a shoot out. The cop was doing his job perfectly. The circumstances are unfortunate, but, he did exactly what he had to do. He could have done it with a much better attitude though.

read the article. they had nurse's and even security guards from the hospital out there trying to get the guy in.

"Moats and Collinsworth?s father went into the hospital, where they found Collinsworth had died, with her daughter at her side." :frown:

man how sad. because a cop has a chip on his shoulder and needs to show the black man who is in charge it made the guy miss the last moments he could have spent with his mother.

ok in the start i agree. what about when the hospital security came up? what about the nurse's? teh cop still sat there and was a dick.

all the cop was doing was makeing him wait to show him who the boss was.

They stopped at the hospital. =[

I think the cop was within the letter of the law but he was definitely on a power trip there.
Where's the compassion?

Since the cop was only 25 he probably has not dealt with a dying/dead parent.
Maybe an older cop would've accommodated the family's situation.

In the end, the cop should not face any punishment over this.

I know, and it sucks. I know I'd have reacted the same way Moats did in that situation. As I said, the cop was a dick, and could have shown some sympathy. Once the nurses came out and proved Moats' story, I'm sure the cop felt like an idiot, but still had to prove he's boss, because he's an idiot.

Illiterate. Only way I can think you post that is by not reading...

The cop just wanted to act like a hard-on and try to force the poor guy into submitting to his point of view. What a prick.

I suspect that the officer did not technically break any rules in this situation, so it may be difficult to punish him, but in my view someone with this little empathy for the plight of another person has absolutely no business working as a law enforcement officer. He should have been bending over backwards to get Moats upstairs after hospital staff confirmed his mother was dying.

i disagree. if he felt like a idiot he would have said. ok the story is legit go up. i have your license and registration and not to mention teh vehicle is right here. i will send the ticket the mail.

but no..he continued to sit in the car then gets otu and continues to lecture him waisting precious seconds.

That is really messed up. I'd be so pissed off if I was him. Seeing a dying relative is definitely very distressing. Cops need to stop focusing on fighting crime and not being dicks all the time. I feel that our tax dollars are wasted at times because I see cops moping around and pulling people for minor items when they should be doing something bigger.
