So you are saying the cop shouldn't have pulled him over, or should have been more polite? Because I think the NFL player should have kept his mouth shut and moved on. Its his fault.

Maybe he should not have admited this...

"?I can screw you over,? the officer told Moats. ?I?d rather not do that.?"

Yea we need more cops like him.

That is really messed up. I'd be so pissed off if I was him. Seeing a dying relative is definitely very distressing. Cops need to stop focusing on fighting crime and not being dicks all the time. I feel that our tax dollars are wasted at times because I see cops moping around and pulling people for minor items when they should be doing something bigger.

focus on fighting crime? since when? most coops are just revenue generators and clean up after crimes.

I know, and it sucks. I know I'd have reacted the same way Moats did in that situation. As I said, the cop was a dick, and could have shown some sympathy. Once the nurses came out and proved Moats' story, I'm sure the cop felt like an idiot, but still had to prove he's boss, because he's an idiot.

Does anybody effing read these says?

Hospital security guards arrived and told Powell that the Moatses? relative really was upstairs dying.

Powell spent several minutes inside his squad car, in part to check Moats for outstanding warrants. He found none.

Another hospital staffer came out and spoke with a Plano police officer who had arrived.

?Hey, that?s the nurse,? the Plano officer told Powell. ?She said that the mom?s dying right now, and she?s wanting to know if they can get him up there before she dies.?

?All right,? Powell replied. ?I?m almost done.?

As Moats signed the ticket, Powell continued his lecture.

he wasnt stopped for speeding.

Was he pulled over for being black? Shit, I'm surprised the cops didn't shoot him in the head after what happened in Oakland last week.

Where's the compassion?

Since the cop was only 25 he probably has not dealt with a dying/dead parent.
Maybe an older cop would've accommodated the family's situation.

In the end, the cop should not face any punishment over this.

I suspect that the officer did not technically break any rules in this situation, so it may be difficult to punish him, but in my view someone with this little empathy for the plight of another person has absolutely no business working as a law enforcement officer. He should have been bending over backwards to get Moats upstairs after hospital staff confirmed his mother was dying.

I definitely agree with you but can he be fired over this?
And if he were, can't he sue the PD for wrongful termination?

ps. I'm a noob in these matters

The new fad around here is the license plate scanners that the local police agencies mount on their cars.

Now they sit in the MIDDLE of the road straddling both lanes and wait to catch someone with an expired registration or lapsed inspection.

I think the fact that he was black had something to do with how he was treated, yea.

Cop's attitude and flexibility after information was revealed was shitty. But getting out of the car and acting frantically after being pulled over is about the dumbest thing one can do.

Did you even watch the video? They were not pulled over. The cop just did catch up to them as they were parking.

I read the whole thing. I understand what happened. I'm just saying, the cop was doing his job, but he could have been a lot more sympathetic.

Exactly. If I did that to the wrong cop I would get treated the same way.

More comments from the uninformed. The article is posted around here somewhere, I swear!

Wow. How the hell did him being pulled over because of running a red light turn into speeding? HA.

That's what I mean. I don't assume he'd quickly swallow his pride, say sorry, and then let them go about their business without getting the last word.

Ryan Moats used to play for the Eagles. He was dumb as a brick, which is why he never played, but a true class act as a human being. I have friends who work for the team that have said the same, too, I'm not just making that up. He was always good with the fans and the community.

If I had to guess without knowing each party personally, but knowing of Moats' reputation, I'd say Moats was unfairly hassled.

i'd like to keep track of this and see where it ends up. that cop deserves some punishment. not sure if firing is in order, but maybe gettting demoted and stuck to a desk might be good for him.

No, firing is in order. If you missed the last part, Moats' FIL sat at this traffic stop and did not get into the hospital until his wife had died. There's nothing that can ever make up for that.

If he only got fired, that'd be getting off easy. He deserves a lot worse.

No I can't. It's just a shitty situation and neither side helped it any. The only reason this is getting press is because it was a NFL player and his family. Equally frustrating clashes happen between cops and normal people all the time.

I think anyone with a little empathy would be able to see that yeah, he deserves to be fined because he knowingly broke the law (but it's not like he went full speed through an intersection, he broke the law as intelligently as he could), but after finding out he has no warrants and hearing that a family member is indeed dying there was no need to lecture or keep him any longer.

Seriously, someone who is purposely keeping you from spending the last moments with a loved one before their death has some real issues. Hell he could have escorted him up there if he really thought it was important to show him who's boss....

The guy basically ran from the cops.

The night my son was born I got pulled over on the way to the hospital. I pulled over right away, let the cop approach me and ask for my info. After I handed it to him I asked him if we could speed things up because my son was being born. He ran my name to make sure I wasn't a serial killer and then gave me an escort to the hospital.

Its all about how YOU react to a situation. The cop doesn't know what's going on and very easily could have charged this guy with a lot more than running a red light.
