There's WWDC in June, but the current word on the street is it won't be out till September.

But, you never know with "And one more thing..."

Don't expect it soon. The curved glass rumors sound cool. I really like the curved glass on the Nexus S.

I hope it is as it's what I am waiting for but I am not expecting it until the fall. I'm switching to Verizon very soon and will be riding an OG Droid until the iPhone 5 comes out.

i'm still guessing for release next month. i think the september rumors are just apple PR keeping their blogs in line so that people will continue to buy iphone 4's until the very end

If history tells us anything, the iPhone 5 (or as it will be known in nerd circles, the 4GS) will look like the iPhone 4, but with iPad 2 guts inside. I have given up hope on a 4 inch screen, I am guessing if they do change the screen (which probably won't happen, again if history is an indicator) it will be 3.7 at best. Finally it might have some sort of new quirky feature that looks cool in a presentation but very few people actual use in the first version (some sort of NFC system?). Apple will still of course point to the benchmarks and dual core CPU and call it a huge upgrade, and it will still be the highest selling new phone of the year.

The excitement this year is not in the high end, but the low end. The 3GS is too old for Apple to continue to sell it new after this year, but if the iPhone 5 is a barely cosmetic improvement over a then low-end iPhone 4 it might harm sales of the higher end model for the majority of society that doesn't care about the tech specs. Therefore to create a non-cannibalizing lower end model Apple basically needs to crank out a plastic iPhone 4.
Two new iPhones in a single year would be a big deal.

Honestly it makes me kinda mad that original iPhone users get these knock off versions. Sure we got an iPhone first, but then our upgrade options are the iPhone 3GS (a not bad phone, but a not great phone either) and the upcoming 4GS. Those that waited for the 3G iPhone get all the paradigm shift upgrades (iPhone 4, and the iPhone 6 with their much improved screens).

In response to a question at its press conference today about whether Apple could've done anything to avoid its antenna issues with the iPhone 4, Steve took the opportunity to rip on bigger rivals, saying that making a phone so big "you can't get your hand around it" helps, but that "no one's going to buy that."

http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/16/jobs-no-ones-going-to-buy-a-big-phone/

I think you are safe. I personally believe we won't see a 4+ inch iPhone until the iPhone 6, at which point Apple will claim that its ok to have such a big phone because "we made it so damn thin."

Won't this actually perform better than the original "premium" one? No shorted antennas (even the Verizon has a much bigger signal drop from normal holding than any other phone), fewer drop-induced breakages, etc.

my friend has an IP4 and says my droidX feels much lighter, and likes the screen better. overall it has never given me any problems fitting into a pocket. shirt or pants. brick not found.

True. My iphone 4, used just to play around with, my real phone is a SGS phone, is freaking heavy. Too heavy. Maybe if they remove the useless rear glass it wouldnt weight so much but I find it to heavy to actually use so I just use it at work for RDP and netflix.

iPhone is heavier because it has a more solid build. Compared to my iPhone 4 my Atrix feels like a toy.

You're half right but all wrong.

The iPhone has the *outward signs* of solid construction. It "feels" like it's well made -- as it should, since the Apple brand is all about having nice signifiers.

It falls short on actual function, however -- the antenna, of course, but in this case durability. Drop the "solid" iPhone and the Atrix onto the same surface repeatedly and you'll notice that:
(1) the extra mass of the iPhone makes it land with more force.
(2) the fancy "premium"-signifying glass back makes it twice as likely to develop a nasty glass problem.

Even though the iPhone4 is more shatter prone, I still prefer the glass front and back. The iPhone4's construction, IMO, is the best.

Even before iPhone4 design rumors, I've always wanted an all glass phone, funny how things turned out.

You don't plan on dropping your phone everyday, infact the last time I dropped my phone was about 8 months ago. Now here is where the construction really comes in play. I used the iPhone 4 for about 9 months before I switched to the Atrix, not once did it squeak or make an odd noise. I have had my Atrix for about a month and when I press the button on the back I can hear squeaks and clicks all around the phone.

In everyday use the iPhone 4's construction just feels better than most other phones, not knocking on the Atrix only here.

whats the big deal with a slightly larger screen size. IMO, I don't want anything bigger than the phone i have now, i played a bit with my friends desire HD, and the larger screen just doesn't seem necessary.

I am 99% certain I will not get an iphone 5, but the current size of the ip4 seems ideal to me, big enough to do what you need, but small enough to slide into any pocket.

again though, it could be slightly thicker, it feels better in the hand to be a little thicker.

Bigger screens are better for everything. Also just because you have a bigger screen doesn't mean you'll have a noticeably bigger phone since there is so much wasted space along the bezel.

a TON of people use phones as media consumption devices, having a larger screen make it easier and more enjoyable. IMO 4 inches is the sweetspot for phones. everything from games to GPS to email look better/ are easier to use on a larger screen.

the bezel on the iphone is massive, pretty sure they could get a 4 in screen in its current form factor if they cut the bezel
the DX is a large phone but its got one of the smallest bezels out there its actually not THAT big compared to the SGS1

I prefer a larger screen just as long as the bezel is small. I'm hoping that Apple will eventually cut the size of the bezel down and increase the screen size.

Outside of rumored hardware additions such as NFC, I'm not sure if the next iPhone will be terribly exciting from a hardware perspective. Sure they'll have faster processors and probably 4G on AT&T, but I can't see anything that really sets them apart from the iPhone 4.

The most exciting features are going to come from iOS 5 in my opinion and those features are going to be available on the iPhone 4 as well. If you don't need a new phone now, you can probably afford to wait, but in my opinion it's probably not worth it if you need something now.

Well, available, but will they be good?

If Apple starts using the iPad2/iPhone5's A5 with stuff like widgets or increased multitasking, the single-core iPhone4 may not be too happy.

If you need a phone now and aren't yet locked into iOS, you could import a better phone already from Europe (SGS2)...

I've had an iphone for ~4 years now, and I'm to the point of where I want a bigger screen. Typing on the phone would be much better for me, as well as having more real estate for video and web viewing.
