Newton Running Shoes

I am starting to train for a marathon coming in July and I seen them in Men's Health or Men's Journal about these shoes being the best new running shoes of 2007. They seem to be a little better for your bones then new balances or asics.

newtonrunning.com

Any opinions or help would be greatly appreciated. the marathon I am running in is the Chron's Disease and Colitis foundation(TeamChallenge) in the Napa Valley region. Anyone ever ran it? Seen the pictures looks pretty nice.

i'm no long distance runner, but I always advocate going to a running store and getting fitted for running shoes. I used to buy New Balance and had awful shin splints and foot pain. Since a specialist took a look at my stride and recommended shoes I've been running pain free.

That said, I've never heard of Newton, but I'm not a big runner. I've read artcles in the past about how barefoot running is better for you (no links sorry, but I think Nike Free shoes try and mimic this), so these could be good as well.

G'luck on your marathon!

i've got no opinion on those shoes (not a fan of the nikefree/barefoot style of running), but i've updated my main pair of running shoes for this season to the asics kayano 14 (from the 12s), and i am VERY happy with them. they're only a week old and i've put 20 miles on them - and my legs feel great. after so many reiterations the kayanos just get better and better. it was editors pick for 2008 at runnersworld so do check these out while you're looking at those.

Not the mall. A store that specializes in running shoes. In Austin, we have Run-Tex.

i live in west palm beach fl, I am sure there has to be a running store around me. I will avoid the mall at all costs.

Ask at the slowtwitch.com forums, the biggest tri forums I've found. These seem to be increasingly popular in triathlon circles for some reason, but a lot of people there have used them. They do not have a heel substantially raised above the forefoot like most shoes do, which does nothing but ruin what your body has anatomically adapted to do for running (the beefed up heel).

BTW, they are ONLY available mail-order or perhaps at certain booths at events, last I checked. A running store won't have them and thus will probably not know about them and/or bad mouth them.

some people on letsrun.com have used them and said they were gimmicky. The lugs or whatever they were tended to rip off or otherwise malfunction. But who knows, YMMV. I think they intended for biomechanically efficient runners who tend towards midfoot running anyway (which most people dont).
