IRC and Usenet are 2 things that remain untouched simply because the RIAA and the like do not have people that are tech savvy enough to even notice they are there. IF they were, newsgroup companies like giganews etc would have been hit a LONG time ago. Also, in the grand scheme of things, if you mention IRC and especially newsgroups...the typical internet user will have no idea what you are talking about. Although alot of people use either or both, looking at the big picture, it would appear as though both IRC and newsgroups are not as popular since the "AOL intarweb" hit the scene. Honestly it seems they have simply been forgotten.
I am not too sure about that.. wasn't that guy who distributed the Hulk and who just got busted using IRC?

With the amount of "material" available on both IRC and newsgroups, one person getting busted because they were passing around a marked screener is hardly evidence that they are watching either service.
Newsgroups are managed on the companies servers...meaning giganews, easynews etc all have their own servers with the groups attached..they do not pull from a universal source. Now, ISP's will typically outsource newsgroups instead of keeping them in house. WebUseNet is popular in the southeast, as is giganews and easynews.

I'm sorry, but this is bull. You can't honestly think that they don't know about usenet or IRC. The reason that they haven't gone after them is most likely that each one was established *many* years ago for legitimate uses, and that *many many* thousands of people use them today for those same original legitimate uses.
