Personally, I plan on getting an SXRD in the near-future. Great black levels. Great contrast. Great color. Of course it's not a CRT, but for the price, I'm not sure what else is better.

There is just so much wrong with that statement. Plasma tech has easily surpassed CRT in just about every area. What's with the allegiance to a dead technology? The ONLY thing CRT has going for it is black levels and I'd say it's has no noticeable advantage over my Panasonic 50pz700u. In fact, wrt Balck levels, I also have a 62u series Sharp Aquos that is BLOWN away by the Panasonic. And that is only really a 1 generation old LCD. Now, if we imagine that the new Pioneer is going to be even better than the Panasonic, where does that leave CRT?

Factor in the obvious advantages plasma (and LCD for that matter) brings. Resolution, Geometry, viewing angles, Size, etc. and I don't really see how you could possible be making a case for CRT at this time. Besides, the best CRTs are direct view and they only go to 40" and I'm not sure those are even 16:9 TV's. As far as projection CRT's, there is no contest as they do not compare to a good plasma. CRT technology is dead.

I'm sure they are awesome plasmas. Pioneer has been ahead of the field all along in plasmas.

I'm also sure that they won't equal the contrast of a CRT. ;)
Hmmm, interesting. How is this black? When I can't see where the picture ends and the black Pioneer bezel starts, that's black to me. ;)

I don't doubt that the Pioneer will be a great Plasma but I have to be suspicious of these types of pictures. I know a little about photography and if you expose for the brightest part of that picture (the flower), you would likely underexpose the shadow areas, making the black level performance appear to be better than it actually is.

Besides, I want to see black level details compared. That is more important IMO and strikes me as the most obvious difference between my Sharp LCD and Panasonic plasma. Sure, the Panasonic can go blacker but more importantly, it renders the shadow detail in a more realistic fashion. It's a bit hard to explain but you can easily see the difference if you compare the TV's side by side.

And I would COMPLETELY agree with you if there weren't for all the first hand accounts of people saying the same thing about the new Pioneers when they saw them in person (the black image blending in with the bezel). Check out what this reviewer said about the new Pioneers. He pretty much does a side by side comparison of the top plasma and LCDs out now and says, "the 720p models absolutely destroy anything currently offered in a 1080p product from Sony, Panasonic, Sharp & Samsung." That's quite a statement, but hey, we'll know for sure soon enough. Like I said, the new Pioneers will be out VERY shortly, and everyone will be able to see for themselves. Needless to say, I'm pretty dang excited!

Point taken. 1st hand accounts seem pretty positive to say the least. It's just that the pictures thing seemed a bit strange to me. Now, if they had it next to another plasma displaying the same picture, that might make sense.

DBL, just wanted to give you an update. Online merchants have already gotten their hands on the 5080 and have them IN STOCK already! The exciting part is, it is HUNDREDS less than the MSRP of $3500! You ask how much less? HUNDREDS less than Panasonic's 50PZ700 online prices! I am absolutely shocked!! I'm glad I didn't jump on the 5070 or the 1140. The prices are fantastic now, and I can't wait to see the actual street prices of the 1080p models coming out in September!
