Newegg vs. Amazon

What happened, did Newegg get better or Amazon get worse? Many years ago Newegg was the shiz. In recent times Amazon seemed to always beat them on price. Now, it's like the opposite. Newegg seems to have the best deals and Amazon is rarely competitive at all. All I want is competition so that I can get the best price.

Am I imagining things? 😕
 
They go back and forth. I tend to go with Newegg for my computer parts because their search/filtering is better and I can 1 stop shop for everything I need.
 
There is No Rule that one is better or worth than the other.

Try both and buy the less expensive.

As for one Stop shop it holds when One has to drive/walk from one store to another.

I would not pay one extra $ because of here and there few less clicks or taps on the screen.

It all depends on what you're looking for at the time and the price. I used to shop a lot at newegg however in recent years I've spent more money at amazon on everything including pc parts. However since tigerdirect took over compusa I can get parts locally for the same price as online so if I need something and they have it in stock here in town that is where I go to first. For online shopping you can use pricegrabber to compare prices and vendors before you buy. It is also a good idea to check resellerratings.com to check out the vendors before you purchase from them especially if you have never dealt with them before.
 
Newegg has way better filtering, and I generally trust their reviews better. Lately their filtering has gotten worse and their marketplace is really annoying.

I got a Firefox addon called "Hover Hound" that lets me prices check Newegg with Amazon and Tigerdirect.
 
I used to buy tons from NE a decade ago, but now average 1 order every other year. I just ordered a small build of a cheap AMD cpu, MB, and case from Amazon. The total was 5 bucks less + I saved a couple bucks in shipping over NE (showed $4 when I ordered but $2 now). I combined that with an Amex offer of $15 off $15 on Amazon so it ended up over $20 off NE prices. Faster shipping with Amazon too (2-day vs 4-7 day).

I usually use Newegg's filtering, find all the parts I want, and then go over to Amazon and order them -- unless, of course, Newegg is substantially cheaper.
 
I quit using Newegg due to my CC having unauthorized charges on 3 different occasions. Not worth it to me if there is security risks associated with a business. Luckily my Credit Union reimbursed all my funds, but it was a hassle none the less.
 
It is a moving target. Even Best Buy said that they would price match and I think competition is steep everywhere. Amazon is a completely different animal. They are more a collection of stores than one big online store. It is like an electronic mall concept. I wonder what kind of volume they do now a days. Everyone seems to be selling a wide variety of products from desktop computers, to tablets, to I-pads to laptops, to phones.
 
If a product does not have free shipping, no reason to buy it. Not only are products tending to be lighter and better designed, but transportation costs are way down also with the price per oil going to rock bottom.

Lower transportation costs are driving a lot of goods down in price.

Exactly the opposite. I'll pay a couple bucks more from Amazon. With Prime I get 2-day shipping and no-questions-asked paid returns. Newegg cannot come close in terms of customer service.

I pay for the privilege of Prime, but I also use it year-round for buying everything from soap to clothes to knives to household appliances to damned near anything that I wouldn't even consider buying from Newegg.

Web site design, search, reviews, pictures are all meaningless in my buying decision. If Newegg has better photos or reviews of a product, then I consider it just another web resource for my product research. Not a reason to spend a single dime there.

I have prime as well but, still find NewEgg's service better in the few times I've had a problem with the order. Everyone is certainly entitled to their own opinion. It's funny how situations can turn you on or off regarding a company or specific products. I'm sure Bridgestone makes some decent tires but, I'll never own them again for as long as I live. However, I'm a fan of ASUS even though, they have none existent customer service.

It's tough to beat no-questions-asked returns in terms of customer service. Maybe if you needed technical, help, Newegg would be better, but I'd never expect technical help from any retailer.

Over Thanksgiving/BF I bought a number of Western Digital Red 4TB hard drives for my server, as deals made themselves available. Got a really nice deal on one from Newegg, but the drive I received from them was manufactured before the drives I received from Amazon and had older firmware on it. That makes me hesitant to buy any more hard drivers from Newegg.

Product loyalty is a different discussion.

I understand what your saying but, I think the decision making on which brands or stores you do business with are intertwined. Think about the net result of your kind of buying (which many people share with you). If everyone simply buys from whoever has the best price, two things will eventually happen. First, quality will decline. Second, the store with the deepest pockets will eliminate any competition.
 
I've actually found that the combination of Microcenter, Amazon and Newegg has been the way to go. Now that Amazon collects state sales tax, the price advantage over local is no longer there. Newegg doesn't charge tax either, but sometimes their shipping speed is not the greatest.

This is my experience as well. Lately, I've also used Tiger Direct and Directron just because they had special deals going. I have a Microcenter near me as well, which is where I got my CPU.

But Amazon collecting tax now makes them not the best option anymore.
 
Never since Newegg has been around have they not been my preferred computer components retailer, save for a brief period of time when Tigerdirect/Bing dollars made for some killer deals. I've never found Amazon to offer better pricing on average over the Egg, and Amazon's website is just a horrendous mess. That alone would be worth a small premium for Newegg to me.
 
If the same price I always use amazon due to amazon card cash back, better return policies and prime shipping.

I've been screwed a few times by newegg, my most recent was a bad refurb they wouldn't accept back on day 95. The issue was hard to notice before then, got a logitech smart remote and it eats a battery every 2 weeks where it should take a year. I wanted to make sure it wasn't the batteries etc and was out of town a couple weeks.

Also loved how they tried to charge me restocking on a defective item I got.

Me too. I have been using Hover hound for the last year as well. I've had issues with all retailers just as I do hard drive makers. I also live very close to a Fry's Electronics. If I need something quickly I just pop over there. These days I usually wait and get it delivered to my door, although Fry's price matches the internet prices.
