Newegg to ship all HDDs in new shock-resistant packaging

Problem is, resellers like Newegg and Amazon buy in bulk. They have to source their own final packaging. I think they have learned that high rate of returns cuts into their bottom line considerably so their addressing a problem that they should have addressed a long time ago.

How many have you bought? I bought at least 100 before we quit using Newegg for drives. When you order 5 or more at a time, the packaging usually sucks. 4 or 5 drives stacked together, and then bubble wrapped. I no longer buy drives from Newegg unless they are retail packed, too much hassle with DOA's and returns.

Heck, they sent one replacement overnight because I complained. They put it in a large FedEx express box, with about three peanuts. It was DOA as well. What a shocker.

Hopefully this is really true, and we can start using them again. But they've claimed to improve packaging before, and didn't change a thing.
 
The new packaging isn't that impressive. Its just designed to be more lazy and idiot proof in a smaller package which will be more economical to ship. Newegg older standard packaging use thick bubble wrap and foam peanuts which worked very well when the workers were doing their job.

And I was right. We needed some drives at work, so I ordered 6 Wednesday. They arrived today from NJ, packed in the usual way. A single layer of bubble wrap, with some paper in the box to take up some, but not all, of the extra space.

At least they wrapped them individually, and didn't stack them all together this time. I'm testing the last two now. So far so good.

So they still haven't changed a thing. Still crappy hard drive packaging.
 
as i write this... 11/22/2013 i orders 2 drives from amazon.
The seagate Baracuda 7200 rpm 3tb drive was on a sale too delicious to miss out on.

Amazon still uses the ghetto cardboard boxes which zap linked, however they have a new middle piece of cardboard which looks like a shock absorber but is a bad example of one.
I would not advise on ordering a single drive from amazon.... add other stuff in your package to absorb the shock when they put the drive with it!!!

the packaging pretty much sucks hardcore... if i didnt have my dogs sleeping matress as a shock absorber in the larger box with the order, i would be suprised if it came working.

There's a significant difference between shock-'resistant' and shock-'proof'. 🙂 Nice to see Newegg take hard drive packaging seriously, only took them 12 years.

For work I buy most things from Newegg, just not drives. I buy our mechanical drives from www.mwave.com they package them very well. The price is usually the same, but they don't have free shipping. Sometimes I get them from Ingram Micro as well, but they usually charge more.

For personal use, where I have the luxury of waiting for a deal, I will buy HD's from Newegg, but only retail packaging. For instance, I got a retail Toshiba 3 TB two weeks ago for $99. Oddly enough, even though the retail packaging has an inch or more of foam all the way around, they wrapped it about three times in bubble wrap, and filled the box with peanuts. Go figure.

It seems the more I order, the worse the packaging gets. If I buy enough parts to build 4-6 systems at once, it's usually downright pitiful. But no one else has the selection they do, so I deal with it.

I could have sworn that when I bought a WD hard drive on Amazon that it came in a package like that. Although, it wasn't from Amazon directly just a vendor.
 
Looks good!

Ive gotten drives wrapped in some clean and tight bubble wrap, and ive gotten drives that are just in the ESD bag only surrounded by packing material....

Generally CA has the right idea when sending out drives.
 
Their packaging is still crap in my opinion. Here's pics of a package I just received this evening. The hard drive was flopping around inside this giant box with my motherboard for the whole journey.

I did. Ended up having to do an rma and they don't crossship rma orders so I made them spring for the 2 day UPS shipping so I can have it for my build next week. I had to sit on hold for over an hour to get to talk to someone though.

Yeah, from what I have seen the last few weeks, they have not changed the way they pack drives at all. Back to Mwave.
