My lowly A will do 2ghz easy. I haven't even tried higher. So, No need for me to run out and get another cpu until Barton arrives. :)

BigJ, that's what I'm gambling on as well. I cancelled my 1700+ order as soon as the 2100+ was "add-able" to cart...I already got burnt on the first 1700+ T-bred A's (running at a lowly 1.825ghz :( ), I certainly didn't need a 2nd one that would do only 100 or 200mhz more. I was willing to take the chance and pay 2x for the 2100+, but $200 for a 2400+ is still too much IMO.

Hey, whatever you need to tell yourself to prevent you from opening up the pocketbook works for me. ;)
I shoulda gotten a 1700+ though anyways, curious what that thing will do with a rig that can push it :)

OK I have a rookie question. I got one of the 1800+ revA, it came 2 days ago. It is retail and comes with little rubber pads, 1 in each corner. These do come off right? I got an ECS K7S5A and a Chaintech Geforce4 MX440 and 1 of those Infinity cases with a 400 Watt PSU.

hehe leave the pads on. What heatsink fan combo are you using? The pads do a poor job of balancing weight during installation of your heat sink, but they are better than nothing. For me they just collect Arctic Silver :) Oh, n/m just saw you bought retail

so...my retail A 1800+(1910mhz @ XP2400+) is not running retail HSF ..running AS3 with a GC68 :p 36c at the moment due to no intake fan running and only the psu's fan for exhaust..and 84F ambient room temp :) the fan for the ionizer is louder :p

Uh yeah.... LEAVE THEM ON!!!

Unless you want to crush your CPU core. Those pads buffer the Heatsink from crushing the CPU core, and even whith those, there is still no guarantee. You take them off and put any form of pressure on your heatsink and your CPU will be dead. Just because its a retail CPU doesn't mean that those pads don't need to be there. Retail just means your warrenty is longer. Trust me those pads are there for a reason..... Kind of like that pressurized door on an airplane. No door.... swoosh everyone gets sucked out regarless of if they work for the airline or not.

I will need a new motherboard for the SLot A AMD type processor.
I got a hechuva deal on an ABIT Raid board for around $58. It is a KT266A but now there are at least three upgrade levels I can choose from.
Since I do not want to put any more into this PC than I have to, and buy new Memory, what type of Motherboard, from where, do you all feel would serve my son's gaming addiction???
Thanks to all for their input.

Misc stuff sniped from your post. First off, you mean a SOCKET A, not a slot right? :) Intel and AMD went away from slot a while ago :) Second, if you already have 2100 DDR memory, any of the newer AMD boards will be fine. Even the ones that support the faster memory, they generally will all work fine with the older 2100 DDR memory until you want to upgrade the memory. That ABIT raid board you are speaking of, was that the Abit KGR7 Raid? I'm using that right now and I like it. Basically any motherboard from a decent manufacture like Abit, Asus, Chaintech, etc etc. Just avoid the stuff like ECS and PC CHIPS and you'll be ok. If you want to spend up around $100 you can get the latest stuff, otherwise $60 or so gets stuff a bit older but still good.

The ABIT MB is a KR7A-Raid - I can see that now since I am at home - and whoops, I did mean Socket A, as the MB or P3 CPU that is fried in the old PC is what I am going to replace and make an AMD machine out of. The problem is, I havent found the ABIT at the same price I paid for it back in May 2002 - around $52. And, that MSI GF3 Ti500 video card I got for around $70 can't be found either...

I have everything else, a good case, DVD and CDRW drives, LAN card, 512MB of PC2100 DDR, modem, sound card, USB 2, etc., I just need the MB and am now even debating about waiting for a couple more weeks (or even months) before rebuilding this PC, as we have the one we built (see above with a 1600+ AMD CPU, a GF3 500Ti, 512MG, ABIT, Santa Cruz, etc.) and it really screams for my "adicted to gaming" 13 year-old son. He is now into Battlefield 1942, Medal of Honor, etc., and we all love the speed and graphics. When my daughter goes off to college (I am a single parent), then she will get the Dell P4 1.8 and I will need a new one come June.

Heck, I still have my Mac PowerPC 5200, and loaded Acer P2, a Toshiba Infinia P2, a Compaq 5265 P3 PC's just sitting around, so I am not hurting and have some experience, but as most of us, I am looking for the best bang for my buck and something that will be dependable. We are so happy with the one my son and I built (the AMD one, my first), that we haven't even tried to OC it - yet.......

So, any and ALL input is appreciated; and anyone with links and prices are doubly appreciated!

Enjoy.

f*ck, i want to overclock but i only have a KT266a mobo! me want overclock!

if i were going to do it, i would get the Epox board nForce board (the + with the LAN) and some crucial PC2700 goodness and set a 1800+ (11.5 * 133) to 2300+ (11.5 * 166). no unlocking, just a simple FSB change. nice and clean, that would be rad!

Excellent CHJF..its getting there...but there is still more room!!! ;)

yodayoda, that's an UNDERCLOCK man, my crappy early week 32 T-bred A is doing that stock jump from 133 to 166 ;) You don't even need to unlock, these guys are unlocked, no cuts, no pits, no window defogger kit, nada :D Keep a decent FSB and crank that multi and your Vcore baby! :)

Sniped stuff.
Take a look here, directron sometimes has some good deals. That's where I got my Abit KG7 Raid one for under $60 shipped.

Take a look at the ones under $100. They have a few around $60 or so.
Newegg has some decent ones too. You can click the products, then AMD motherboards, then on the left hand side, tell it to give you all the motherboards under $70 or whatever your limit is.

And if you are going to pay $70 for a vid card, you might want to consider going up to $100 or so and getting a geforce 4 4200. (Avoid the geforce 4mx like the plague).

Oh, and check compgeeks they sometimes have good deals. Just read the description and see if its new or refurbbed.
