My dad is resubscribing to verizon and he plans on buying a 200$ DROID (buy one get one free) and i'm getting the second one. I just wanted to ask the AT guys if you had any better ideas for that kind of deal.

I believe the consensus is Droid (Motorola) if you want the keyboard and Droid Incredible (HTC) if not. Someone correct me, if I'm wrong.

are you in an absolute rush to get a new phone?

If not, I would wait a month or so and see what the summer brings.

even if you don't want the Iphone, a release of the iphone for verizon might force other makers to drop prices or work out some deal with verizon to run a promo.

there's also the motorola shadow that's looking at a potential july release.

I think its more likely that the Moto Shadow and Droid 2 launching this summer will be the phones to wait for.

But if you have to buy now, either the Incredible or Moto Droid are fantastic phones and pretty much at the top of the high end market for now.

On a side note, there are a plethora of polished, refined roms for the Moto Droid, greatly expanding its capabilities and functionality. Not sure how the mod community is going for the Incredible, but any new phones will need time for roms to bake. If modding is your thing, you'd be better off getting the Moto Droid or another phone with an established, healthy, mod community.

When will you be out of contract? Verizon and most other cell providers will let you upgrade early, before your existing contract expires, and they'll give you renewal prices. But $200 for a Droid, even with BOGO, is insane when you can get it for $20 from Amazon and elsewhere.

Once your contract is completely expired, you should be able to sign a new contract and thus get access to new contract pricing on phones from places like Amazon, Wirefly, Best Buy, etc. It's generally cheaper than buying from the carrier.

Not sure if you can do an early renewal from anyplace other than Verizon, though. Anyone want to comment on that?

I would skip the Droid at this point. When it was new it was great but it's hardware is getting dated. I would either go with the Incredible or wait for the Shadow. The modding community will catch up, it always does if the phone is popular.

I don't know, the Droid is still viable depending on your needs. I run mine at 1Ghz but have no problems at 1.2 using one of the low voltage kernels.

I don't think you can go wrong either way, and 2.2 may be coming to Droid earlier than feared.

Conversely, it would be pretty easy to predict that the iPhone 4 is just going to be an iPhone with the iPad hardware in it, which will mean the Droid Incredible is still the superior device in terms of technical capability. Even if by some miracle the iPhone 4 had crazy new hardware that surpassed the iPad, it would still be running iPhone OS.

Our contract expires in December. I looked at upgrading to the Incredible now.
I can upgrade for $599 or add a line for $199. I'll wait till December and see what's available.

Balls! by chance does anybody know of the differences between the droid ERIS and the droid incredible? all I know is that the ERIS runs android 1.5 whilst the incredible runs 2.1

The Eris is officially on 2.1 now (finally).

And there are a lot of other differences. Both phones are a candybar form factor (touchscreen only, no slide-out keyboard) but the Incredible has a larger, higher-res screen, faster processor, and more RAM.

What I find especially unusual is that the full retail price of smartphones is so rarely tied to how good or powerful it is. The Eris, a comparatively low-end phone, is $469 without a contract. The Incredible is $529, which isn't that much more considering how good it is. Meanwhile, there's a Windows Mobile phone, the HTC Imagio, that costs $579, and the Palm Pre Plus is $599! There is also a cheap Android phone from Verizon, the LG Ally, that is "only" $369.

I don't think most of these companies were expecting anyone to buy phones for full retail, hence the strange pricing.

I would still get the Droid over the Incredible. The Moto Droid has an awesome build... the Incredible, like the N1 feels lightweight and cheap...

After owning my Incredible for a month, I returned it to Verizon and went back to my Droid. There were some things I liked about the Incredible but in the end it just felt too cheap and I had a a few other minor issues with it. The geek in me just prefers the Droid better.

I would highly recommend the Droid over the Eris if you're buying subsidized. Other than being a bit larger, it's better than the Eris in basically every way.
