So Total War: League of Legends style? I haven't ever played LoL or even LoL style games so that's just a guess.

They explicitly said that its not a MOBA style game - its basically a battle whereby you control 3 units of men (maximum of 500 troops) with more basic control than a normal total war game, I think they mentioned manual cavalry charges and aiming where the arrows go on the map.

This is the article I read about it: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/03/28/the-creative-assembly-announce-f2p-total-war-arena/

Well that was a lot more reassuring than the polygon article but still

From that article
Outside this real-time battle game will be a “progression wrapper, where players can upgrade generals, units, and items.” This is the layer of persistence for players: a commander and units that will be developed, become veterans, and so on.

Russell also talked a little about the issues around the game being free to play, and said that the monetisation concept is about accelerators, about advancing progression, and he stressed that most content will be free. It’s just a case of looking at how quickly you can get it.

Sorry, that is still pay-to-win for me, and I don't play pay-to-win.

If it's done reasonably, it could still be free. LoL has accelerators. However as long as you don't play with a gotta catch them all mindset then you're not behind anyone else since you only need a small set of champions and runes to play maximally (the rate at which you expand beyond that doesn't make you play better). I'm not saying you should play the games if you still don't like that though.

I'm guessing it won't be though.
