Anything much past civil war timeframe would be difficult to maintain current game format.

Does anyone know which license they have for warhammer? either 40k or fantasy would be awesome (or do they have both)?

They have both now, but they acquired fantasy's a few months back and just recently acquired 40k's with the whole THQ going under. Sega has only had the 40k license for like a month, so it wont have anything to do with that probably.

Yeah although if they are just announcing it maybe it could be - I dont know how long the project would be in development before they would announce it. I could see another game coming out the year after RTW2 because they could use the same engine - and they would feel less need to modify it/experiment with other things because they are experimenting/progressing my using a completely different setting (if it was warhammer)- almost basically like a mod for the Rome game.

Just kidding, hope its Warhammer or somethign equally exciting.

I'm so pumped for Rome 2 as well.

Maybe they planned on getting it and was pulling a "starcraft" stealing of the IP in the interim. Once they got the IP they do some find/replace and bam War40k game. Granted, this is very unlikely, and I'd like to see the fantasy setting. I wouldn't be opposed to seeing them try a TW:40k, but so far melee heavy armies have faired far better for the style.

I've spent about 500 hours in Shogun 2 and about 7 in E:TW. It's not good in my opinion although it's probably a little close to what a TW:CW game would be. Primarily gun armies just don't jive quite right and the battles become really boring. Maybe they could do something with the faster paced fighting in the civil war, but I'm not anxious to see it with how poor E:TW turned out.

Use Melee Mode and grapeshot artillery more. bring enough cavalry to chase down the survivors. Don't use them to charge stuff.

I haven't played Shogun, but I have at least that much time in R:TW and Empire's battles are usually over faster; being boring is not a problem.

Wow, that's a game I don't even need to see before saying no to. Not even free piques my interest.

I can't read any of the details, but at the very least, it is awful and free so you can try it and hate it.

Shogun was boring to me. Empire was better but M2:TW was the best of the three.

Total War: Arena, an upcoming free-to-play multiplayer-focused installment in The Creative Assembly's strategy game series, is in development, series lead designer James Russell announced during a GDC 2013 talk today.

Russell revealed that the game will feature 10v10 battles, with each player controlling three units. Players will be able to both earn and purchase items in-game. He characterized Total War: Arena as a cross between a multiplayer online battle arena and a massively multiplayer online role-playing game.

"It provides a much richer variety of experience," Russell said of the multiplayer-focused game.

The developer is hoping to gather a large player population, which is part of the reason The Creative Assembly chose the free-to-play model, Russell said. Total War: Arena has been in development about a year.

Russell said that the developer is experimenting with changes to the Total War formula, focusing on changes like manual aim, charges and active firing, all of which are influenced by the MOBA genre. He also characterized it as a response to the three units players will control, as opposed to the 20 units in the "core" Total War series.

"We want Arena to be just as active and skill-based [as previous Total War games]," Russell said. "It absolutely has to be."

The Creative Assembly will be overhauling the damage control in Total War: Arena with a new focus on per-unit damage. Attacks from the left or right may only damage certain units, Russell explained.

"The behavior of individual men is completely automated," he said.

A series of short videos shown at the end of the reveal highlighted a working version of the game in which a player selected and moved individual units using drag-and-drop control.

In response to a question during the Q&A session, Russell said that Total War: Arena is not planned to be set in a fixed time period. The developer will use add-on content to introduce more components to the battlefield, possibly from different time periods.

You can sign up for information about the game's upcoming closed beta tests at the official Total War website.

Oh jeez . . . this has fail written all over it.

So Total War: League of Legends style? I haven't ever played LoL or even LoL style games so that's just a guess.

But hey, Rome 2 is still coming, right? Right?
