Because I am having a discussion about the state of Mario franchise which I started playing in 1985. My argument is it's stale, too old, and overuses certain things. What's your argument?

My argument is that you are stale, too old, and overuse certain things.

And that right there is why you will never win any argument. You have no points to make so you get mad and resort to personal attacks. People wonder why fanboys suck...

I've eaten that same things, the same staple meals for 30 years. They still taste wonderful. Just because you've had the same thing repeatedly doesn't mean it's bad. Mario is fun. 2d Mario is great fun.

I rank SMB3 and SMW both within my 10 favourite games ever. But I have to admit that the DS NSMB games are very underwhelming and while the consoles version are better, but still not as good as the oldies. Still need to play this one, and even if it's the best of all 4, I can't help but feel it will come far, far short. I play SMB3 and SMW at least once every year and have for many years, but the NSMB series doesn't bring me back to it. I sincerely hope this is the last title in that series and that 2D Mario continues in another, better form.

Bought and returned a Wii U because of this game. If you played New Super Mario Bros. Wii then you have already played this

yeah but to be honest, i got tired of the New SMB on the DS and 3DS. it didn't have the flair that SMB3 or SMBW had. Hell, even SMB2 i like over the newer stuff. i guess i should be glad the Wii U is sold out. Saved me $400.....for now.

So you admit it was on rails then.

Not in the way rayman is - only in the way that most 2d platformers are. Rayman was a step beyond that and a good portion of many levels you are just watching your avatar roll around and then have to press jump once or twice. The flying levels were great, and some levels were really engaging. But way too many of them were just you interacting mildly as a bunch of stuff happens on screen.

Do you mean the treasure chest levels where you have to run the whole time? Those are indeed basically on rails and do so wonderfully. One of the greatest 2D platformer highlights of all time are the actual rail levels.

The rest of the game is pretty typical in terms of linearity for 2D platformers. There's titles out there much more open ended, I agree, but it's not on rails. Only 2D Mario games with actual flight like SMW and SMB3 are more open.

I don't find a comparison between mandatory food and a video game terribly meaningful :)

Dude, don't take this the wrong way but what are you really trying to accomplish here? You have a perfectly acceptable opinion in that you personally feel that 2D Mario (and perhaps the Mario Bros. universe in general) is "played out" for the lack of a better term. What I'm not sure on what you expected to get out of repeatedly bashing the game (and people who enjoyed it) in the review thread here. Did you expect everyone to come out and brofist and trade stories about how dated Mario is? It's a critically acclaimed title (and universe), so the overwhelming majority of people are going to feel otherwise (again stressing that no one is really right or wrong here, just trends). I mean I personally haven't found any of the Halo games to be all that enjoyable but I know I'm in the minority there and don't feel the need to go troll up threads about it.

No but I expect people who disagree to not resort to simply bashing someone because it's painfully obvious I am not the only one who has this opinion about the game.

I say "it's stale" they say "go away". That's the problem

Don't bother trying to talk sense. It's much more fun to make nonsensical comments and see him get up in arms about how he's defending his viewpoint/logic and how you're a fanboy and a troll.

I already knew he had nothing constructive to say when he entered a Super Mario Review Thread about IGN's review and his take was:

Because I am having a discussion about the state of Mario franchise which I started playing in 1985. My argument is it's stale, too old, and overuses certain things. What's your argument?

He didn't mention if he ever played the game(s), from the Wii, DS, 3DS, and now the Wii-U. How can you review or express dissapointment in a game you've never played? You can certainly express disinterest, but what is the point of doing so?

I stay out of CoD threads because I have no interest in them, but by his logic, I'd show up in each one and express my dissapointment of how first person shooters have adopted the Madden-type business model, where mod tools are no longer released and how the fanbase used to keep games alive by creating their own mods and maps but now with the advent of DLC, publishers/devs nickel and dime you to death for stuff that used to be free so now a game no longer costs just $50 but is rather a $59.95 initial investment and $29.99 installments every 3 months for tiny map packs or game modes that probably should have come with the game in the first place.

Do I do that? Nah. Because I'm not an imbicile.

They say "go away" because you don't add anything to the discussion. You can take your route: http://youtu.be/cDGlN6mluGA or you can actually do something constructive. So by stale, you could mean the level design really didn't vary much in the game (or from NSMBW), that a thin "save the princess" story might have been enough 30 years ago but isn't enough anymore, or that all of the characters are one dimensional. Saying any or all of these things will lead to a discussion; again most people will disagree with you (back to the minority opinion issue) but there wouldn't be any name calling. Then again, this is how a reasonably mature person would act. For the record, from the time I've spent with the game it's a freakin' blast and while not quite as charming as last year's Rayman Origins or Sonic Generations (16-bit Sonic was executed PERFECTLY), it still was one of those "ear to ear grins" titles.
