JellyBaby - Since they had an hour (less commercial time) to show the battles and advance all the other plot elements, I'll just do the Star Trek thing and assume that they skipped the boring 2 minutes when shots were just hitting shields and jumped right to the part where all the ships blew up. It is just a TV show, afterall.

I'm using WWII references because many people assume that huge, armoured battleships were almost impossible to sink (i.e. the Bismark which was pounded for days) when there are plenty of examples of one shot/one kill in naval battles. Nelson against the Spanish Armada destroyed huge numbers of Spainish ships as soon as the "crossing the T" maneuver took place.

btw - the crack about being a "teenager" isn't the best thing to say at Anandtech (Anand himself is still a teenager). Plus I graduated from HS at 15 (16 if I went to school in the US vs. Quebec) and was out of university by 20.

**yawn**

I don't think it'll make any difference. All the actors are going on strike, and will most likely starve to death before any new series can be produced.

Won't that be nice.

i too would like to see a episode based on star trek academy

they even had one episode in TNG where that one bajoran recruit got sent out on that mission and died, yet we got to see 3 other ensigns throughout the episode... was quite entertaining :)

Gee, Michael, thanks for the advice. But I'll continue to poke fun at whichever groups I so choose. My advice to you is to stop taking things personally and drop the controlling attitude. Life is much more pleasant that way. Teenagers love special effects, awesome graphics -- a high "wow" factor sells to them. Thus I stand by my statement:

<< Anyway, point is that battle was bogus and things blew up quick just to appease the teens with special fx. >>

JellyBaby - No problem. Of course, I'm just offering my opinion about your negative comment about teenagers and a suggestion that this isn't the best place to make it. You are welcome to ignore whatever I say. However, thanks for identifying yourself in public as someone that stereotypes teenagers as just wanting big explosions and flash instead of what you define as substance (I disagree with your assertion that the ships were blowing up too fast, but I'm not that into ST and I may be way off). I'll be sure to consider your opionions and comments on such matters with the appropriate amount of attention in the future.

Michael,

It wasn't a negative crack. If you took it that way that's your problem not mine. And again, please drop the condenscending attitude.

I agree with Xede. I don't shun something because I feel that it's somehow beneath me, like Other people seem to be doing. To discredit something just because it is popular is the Exact same mentality as shunning something because it Isn't popular. you're just playing a role reversal.

nullshark was close to the mark. The first season of TNG was tweaking the characters. First they had to rid the "doogie houser saves the day" plot lines. Then they eventually got rid of Worf's Chemo-cut, and gave him some long hair. You may have noticed they did thatearlier than you think because he had it "tied up" for a while. So it looked shorter but he had it let down in an episode. Riker got the beard. Fine tuning worked well, then they got greedy and thought they could cash in for movies, not. I won't pay one dime to watch them in a theatre.
Anyway, the plots took a plunge when Roddenberry died. The subordinates claimed they ran the show even while he was still around, but the proof is in the pudding. DS9, Voyager. Took them a long time till they explained in an episode why the Federation didn't use the cloaking device that Kirk stole. And look at Voyager playing with Trans Warp drive. Duh, seems they had that back in Search for Spock movie. What happened? The producers think we are all stupid and will except whatever they throw our way because it's Star Trek. Time to dig Kirk up for another mission. Maybe they can get him cheaper on Price Line.
;)
Still, I watched them all. Ferrel looks better in spots than in real life except when she did "Back to School". Ryan was perfect choice for borg since she already had some of her own implants ;)
There will never be a real good ST series because no Roddenberry to oversee things. Babylon5 is superior to the all. Hot rumour is B5 is coming back with new movies and possible series. Comes from JMS himself. Deal in works.

...intro with some inane conversation...
Picard: "What's going on? Why are people dying?"
...10 minutes of investigating...
Geordi: "Oh! it's due to a rip in the fabric of space!"
Riker: "What do we do?"
...10 minutes of people getting bent out of shape...
Deanna: "People are starting to get depressed at the thought of dying"
...10 minutes of people coming to terms with the end...
Worf: "It looks like there's no solution! We need to die with honor"
...10 minutes of more investigation...
Picard: "Data, what do you think?"
Data: "I think if we flood the area with whatsitron particles we can close the rip.
Picard: "Do it!"
Data: "That worked, we are now all safe."

The End.

Many episodes of TNG, DS9, and Voyager were so formulaic that they were indistinguishable. But there are still a lot of good episodes, where the resolution involves some serious insight, rather than some lame technical mumbo jumbo.
