"Evidence of bleaching will disqualify applicants," says the application, issued by the university's College Republicans.

Haha. Go nuts, you crazy white people. :) It just sucks that someone somewhere is going to whine about this.

Flame me all you want...
I dont consider myself racist as i have friends of all colors and nationalities...
But, with all of the 'hispanic only' and 'african american only' scholorships available, all i have to say is, "About damn time."

"No matter what my ethnicity is, I'm making a statement that scholarships should be given out based on merit and need,"

I think the point is that scholarships should be color blind and should go to the most deserving candidates.

Well, privately funded scholarships are going to go to whatever subset of society the private funders want to support. For some scholarships, that's the general college populace, but for others funded by minority or specialty organizations, that's often whatever minority group comprises their membership.

A protest like this isn't going to change that in the least. If they were using this to make a point that college admissions should be based entirely on merit (and I agree), then it seems like a good wake-up call. If that's the case, and it may well be since I only skimmed through the article, then good for them. But the truth is, minority groups aren't going to care, and their $250 whites-only scholarship is just going to remain an oddity.

Jason Mattera, 20, who is president of the College Republicans, said the group is parodying minority scholarships.
.
.
.
Mattera, who is of Puerto Rican descent, is himself a recipient of a $5,000 scholarship open only to a minority group.

WTF?

Edit: Yeah, sounds like he's really protesting minority scholarships...

It's sounding more and more like a college stunt, not exactly the best way to go about exacting change. :p

This makes me wonder whether he'd have gotten that $5000 scholarship if not for his race, and if he'd be okay with it if he didn't. No doubt he's a successful student (well, I'm assuming), but it would be interesting to know the criteria judged in awarding that scholarship.

I think it's stupid and racist. But then again, I think the UNCF is fvcking racist. All the bullsh!t that goes directed to any race is racist. The NAACP is racist.

At UF, we have The Hispanic Engineering Society.. and the Black Engineering Society. I think there's also an Asian Engineering Society. Fvck that, I wanna be in a fvcking society. The only one available for me is Engineering Honor Society.. well, I'm not fvcking good enough for that either.

So fvck these dumb people for starting a white-only scholarship... Unless they do something cool and give it to some other race than white as a show of the fact that racism is only perpetuated by those that look at race.

Racism is hardly the problem that these few idiots would have you believe. I don't care.. you are NOT getting a cookie based on your race from me. Spanish people better watch the fvck out.. They'll be the majority soon.. and us whities will be the minority.. yet I somehow think we'll still be unfairly labeled as the oppressors.

ARGH..

It's only $250 b/c it's just a parody. They aren't trying to pay for an entire college education, they are trying to raise awareness. I remember taking the PSAT/NMSQT and reading that as a white person I was eligible for ONE scholarship while a non-white student was eligible for THREE, including the only one I was eligible for. That's just plain ludicrous.
In NJ we have a program for underpriveleged students called "Educational Opportunity Fund" for which only non-whites are eligible. I guess the poor white kids just don't count.

Well, considering the president of the organization awarding the scholarship isn't eligible for it (he's Puerto Rican), that's pretty different.

Please. Supporting the scholarship doesn't mean you're a racist. Personally, I think giving someone one simply for being a particular color is retarded. It's patronizing and demeaning, thinking they can't make it on their own.

I had this idea when I was in high school! I noticed that there were a lot of minority and women scholarships, and I thought it was odd to just exclude the white guys so blatantly. A friend and I joked about setting up the "white guy only" fund.

So, my first year of (out of state) college was paid for completely by scholarships. A few of them were minority scholarships (did I mention I'm not white?). What I learned in my first year of college was that students who are US citizens have it pretty good... if you're poor enough. I went to undergrad mostly for free because the government showered me with Pell grants. I only made like $3000 a year (in the summer) and my parents didn't help me out.

After high school these little scholarships pretty much dry up. If you really are poor, the government (US tax payers) will pay for your schooling... and they don't ask what color you are... since it seems to bother people so much.

So, if you really want to go to school for free, ditch your parents and try to stick it out on your own. :D

This guy reminds me of a picture I saw in a friend's HS yearbook. It was taken shortly after 9/11 and there was a group of students protesting and holding up "war is not the answer" signs. Funny thing was, he they didn't way what the answer was.

Now, this guy is much the same. Colleges use race as admission criteria = bad. Ok, then private citizens set up scholarships for minorities....also bad. Well, what would have to be done not to offend this guy then? Pre college workshops aimed at minorities? No, white students have to pay for that! Inspirational speeches at inner city schools? What about inspirational speeches for white students!!!!

For poeple like this guy, its much easier holding up signs saying "this isn't the answer" rather than providing the answer.
