New Rig with no sound

Well, I just built a new pc and can't seem to get any sound to work. Here's some specs:

core 2 duo e6750 2.66 ghz
gigabyte p35-ds3r mobo
ht omega striker 7.1 channel sound card
logitech z-5500 surround sound 5.1 channel speakers

Now, I've heard of some people having problems with getting sound to work on this mobo. I did disable the onboard sound, but not before I installed my OS if that makes a difference. I know that my sound card isn't the problem as windows detects it fine and my drivers are up to date for it. My speakers aren't the problem as I can hear the little noise they make when you plug them in and I tried my old Altec Lansing speakers to be sure of this. I've also tried the onboard sound which doesn't work either. I've checked volume levels in control panel, made sure my sound card is used as the default device, and made sure there are no conflicts in device manager. I'm really not sure what else to do but ask for some help. Now, this being my first pc build I may have missed something that I should have connected on the mobo when assembling. I don't have anything hooked to the 4-pin CD_IN connection. If I've been too vague or someone needs more info please let me know and I'll respond as soon as I can.
I very much appreciate any words of advice on this. Thanks.

i know that not having any sound is very frustrating and ive been there before, it hurts.

that said, heres some basic things to try out.

first off, try uninstalling and reinstalling the latest drivers for your video card.
secondly, try removing your sound card and enabling the onboard sound and try to use the onboard sound. if you are able to use onboard sound then we know it is a problem with your sound card, if you are unable to use onboard sound then it will most likely be a software problem rather than a hardware problem.

go do those things and report back!

he tried using the onbaord sound.

and he's tried a soundcard.

I think it might be a defective board.

Well, it could indeed be a defective board, but like I said this is the first computer I've ever built. It is very possible that I overlooked something during assembly. I did follow an online guide step-by-step to assemble it though. Do I need to connect something to the CD_IN 4 pin connection on the mobo? Like I said before, I don't have anything hooked up there. What connections on the motherboard control the sound output? I have the speaker 4 pin connection on but I was under the impression that it was the thing that beeps when you start the computer up. I've tried listening to mp3s, audio cds, and game sounds and nothing puts out any sound at all.

Joejoeself, you suggest uninstalling and reinstalling the latest drivers for my video card. Did you mean sound card? I didn't know that a video card could cause a sound problem, but I know very little about sound problems. You said that if neither my onboard nor my expansion sound card works that it would likely be a software issue. Could you elaborate on what process you would use to troubleshoot this since that is the case?

Also, are there any good websites for tech support or just sound tech support? If anyone has any links for me I would appreciate it very much. I need to work through all possible solutions in the next 5 days so that I can return a defective part within the period allotted. Thanks in advance for any help.

the way he stated it he made it sound like he tried onboard sound while it was disabled in the bios which would keep it from working.

i dont think its defective, its more likely a vista problem then anything else.

yeah i meant sound card not video card, oops!

i was just saying if neither your soundcard or onboard audio work then its most likely something with vista rather than your soundcard and onboard both being dead, which is unlikely.

if the boards not letting the slots the sound card are in work or being placed in conflict with the onboard, then it's not vista's fault. a good way to test it would be to boot.
he could try burning a live cd of a linux variant and let it test the sound card and onboard sound. I have a feeling it'll have issues as well, and he'll have to replace the motherboard.

I think the CD-in line is a legacy deal. Have you tried the sound card in a different slot?

he has tried the card in different slots, and neither it nor the onboard produces audio. I'm sticking to it being a defective board.

I don't see where you said you removed the add-in card and the on-board sound still fails. Can you confirm you've done that and the on-board sound fails?

In the BIOS all options for sound are enabled?

What is the color of the jack you're using to get your motherboard's onboard sound?
