it makes a very small difference at very high res, but not enough in most instances to make up for 3870's arch improvments and faster clocks.

Any reason why the Hardware Canuck review wasn't added to the OP? They are less well known than some of the bigger sites but the results look fairly comprehensive and they have Crossfire results.

i am not linking with any preference or bias at all, just linking ones i found and read and posted them here. you the reader can determine if the reviews sucks or not. reviews added per request :)

By all means, I consider computerbase, techreport, toms and hardware.fr of those you mentioned to be the most QUESTIONABLE hardware review sites I have ever crossed. Why does techreport offer ZERO tests at the resolution which at least 90% of us uses? Aka 1280x1024 or 1650x1080? And the colin mcrae results at computerbase are extremely low Q.o.

you criticize my choice of selection yet fail to mention the good reviews that are linked. my intentions for linking the reviews was not for people to complain one way or another, just wanted to link to what people were saying about the new radeon. everybody is entitled to their opinion. why not make your own review and post it on the web, let others tell you how good of a job you are doing

I do by no means critize your choices hclarkjr, I critize Munkys choices of ''questionable'' review sites of the ones you listed. I do not care if you list review sites that people consider to be questionable. You are doing all of us a favor by writing this reference thread which people can refer to, to check on how the new ati offering performs :). That is all that matters to me.

keep in mind that amd deliberately has kept the gpu at that temp under load b/c they're more concerned about noise. you can manually adjust fan speed on the gpu fan, I would highly recommend trying that first before buying an aftermarket cooler.

True, did not think about that, btw. the official release is tomorrow right, together with the other AMD products? I hope they are in stock here in Denmark :/

they've been out since the 15th in the US. I ordered one on newegg that day

re the fan, remember that you can always order a better fan if you don't like the performance of the stock fan.

I was planning on getting a 3870, but actually found a 8800gt in stock so I bought it. But if the cooler noise gets too annoying, I'm swapping the card for some other one.

the cooler noise and the dual slot cooler that exhausts the heat out of the case sold me. Also, it looks like nvidia was stretching on this one while amd was conservative with it, so I might end up with similar perf to 8800gt but get my low noise/power, too.

just in case any of you are interested in the whereabouts of my 3870, here it is:
