I didn't even know the GGB had a Foxconn plant on it.

I googled but am still looking for the site where people can be nominated for this.
One idiot drove to the crown of the bridge, (about 140-150 feet from the water) stopped his car, jumped out, ran over and jumped. He missed one of our barges by about 20-30 feet. He'd have killed someone if he'd have landed on them...and seriously fucked up the production of that crew for a few days...He survived. One of our tug boats saw him jump and chased him down. (current really rips in SF bay during the flood/ebb tides) Pulled him out and took him to a waiting ambulance at the dock. I had a crane servicing the boats and hoisted him off the boat in a stokes stretcher. His back was broken and he had some internal injuries, but he survived the jump. MOST do not.
Wow, what went through your mind when you saw that?
A better question would be why would you jump off any bridge?![]()
what is the actual cause of death when jumping off a bridge?
the combination of impact + breaking of bones/passing out and then drowning?

I recently heard that the majority of people don't decide to actually kill themselves until less than 30 minutes beforehand. I always thought that stuff would be super-premeditated, but apparently the action quickly follows the actual decision.
Which explains why suicide hotlines work (and exist) - I always wondered why you'd want to call someone for help if you'd thought about it so much, but if it's more of a spur-of-the-moment decision, then talking to someone to get through your problems can apparently really change your mind on it.
Wow, I just read that 1,600 people have jumped off the bridge since it was built. That was like my entire high school, freshman through seniors...holy crap![]()
...and exactly who did they poll to get those numbers?

Yeah it kinda suggests that the people that plan properly aren't available for interview.![]()
Stuff like that is why I never believe any statistics. People quote them like they are fact when no one knows exactly how the information was obtained.

My guess is it's drowning. People sometimes jump off bridges as a recreational activity but they'll swim back to shore. Not any different than a diving board, except for the fact that it's not a controlled area and you might hit something like a rock or a log that you did not know was there so there is a danger to it. A suicide would be to just not swim and let yourself drown.

Why don't they put antisuicide fences all over the bridge? Many other suspension bridges have this. 10' of fence topped by razor wire will discourage the vast majority of jumping wannabes.

At that height, hitting the water is like hitting concrete thanks to the lovely science of surface tension. Pretty much kills you instantly before you get a chance to drown. I've heard of the odd person surviving though, but not uninjured. Then drowning becomes a real possibility unless your lucky enough to have a boat conveniently sail by.
I'm surprised a liberal city like San Francisco hasn't put suicide barriers on the bridge. Or is the cost so astronomically high that it knocks sense into the lefties.
