I think Rage is going to be the premier single player FPS experience in 2011. Crysis 2 is awesome, but the lack of DX11 at launch really put a hamper on the brilliance of the game in peoples' collective minds.

BF3 will be amazing, but it's focus is on online play, and not everyone likes to play online.

Rage on the other hand seems to have all the right qualities of a premier FPS:

1) Awesome graphics (as evident in the video above)
2) Open world design
3) Deep and interesting storyline
4) Varied gameplay
5) Varied environments

Since Rage uses that megatexture technology, the environments and textures should have much greater variation than previous FPS games......at the expense of hardrive space (take that SSDs!)

Heck, watching that video I could already tell that "megatexture" is no B.S :D

Will be interesting to see how this performs when it comes out. Doesn't it use OpenGL instead of DX?

I could only watch half that video. The game just looks amazing and I don't want to spoil playing it for the first time. John Carmack has also said Doom 4 looks even better and might be released this year.

Hmm, this looks a lot better than the stuff they've shown before. Its also like a 180 from what they were saying in the past. They basically downtalked the open world (said its not about exploring) and it came across very simple and linear.

The graphics look spectacular. The bits and pieces seen before looked very me too-ish and actually kinda claustrophobic (came across really linear).

I'm kinda turned off on how much they keep harping about story though, as nothing about it seems original at all. Borderlands and Fallout weren't original either, but they each added their own unique bit that I think makes up for it. I'm not saying Rage is doomed to suck, but I'm not seeing any of the unique spark. They can overcome it with excellent execution (and it looks like they've done about as good as possible from a technical standpoint).

How they did that video really makes it sound perfect for an RPG, so I'm not sure how well stuff like fetch quests will work with a more traditional shooter. Maybe its more like Bioshock, which wouldn't be terrible.

I was really interested in this game a couple of years ago, but after some of the stuff I read about it, I got turned off from it. This looks a lot better. Guess I'll wait and see what feedback is.

The graphics are pretty good, will have to pick this one up. Although, I hate to say this, but I cannot take any game seriously with their voice acting/facial movements ever since playing L.A. Noire. It's just that big of a step to a whole other level when it comes to communication within a game.

I'm not really feeling it. It looks to me like Fallout 3 / New Vegas with better graphics, a different story, and more focus on shooting and less on RPG elements. It's also very similar to STALKER, Metro 2033, and Borderlands in my mind.

Time will definitely tell though. I just hope this isn't the next Alan Wake with all of the hype.

A lone guy sets foot in a post-apocalyptic world, starts fighting his way forward, eventually joins up with other survivors, gets in a car and drives around for a while, and eventually meets up with a resistance movement fighting a more powerful authoritarian force.

There's an red and white barrel being detonated with gunfire at 0:38. And an automated gun turret at 3:12.

Seems like I've played this one already... :)

Hah, my first thought was that it was borderlands meets fallout.

Anyway, I don't really think it LOOKS that impressive. I know it's youtube and it only goes to 720p but the textures still look very low res. Probably because they're showing console game footage. I'd like to know what the PC version looks like as it seems to me like it won't be anything special. It's also just another wasteland. Oh boy... look at those greys and browns. Nothing to be excited for really.

The story sounds like it could be interesting but it's something done many times before. It's also something that looks like it's going to be just thrown in and a pretty useless excuse to shoot stuff.

I don't see anything here that hasn't been done elsewhere. It looks like a boring shooter that's just like other shooters done in the past. Borderlands had the loot and fun co-op aspect. Fallout 3 had a decent story and heavier RPG ties than a normal FPS. This just looks like a game that doesn't do anything special on its own.

So, a meteor hits the Earth and 100 years later there are mutants, cool. I wonder why they are doing so much fanfare about RAGE's story, it really is generic... BUT, it DOES look good, and looks like it will be fun to play, I for one will surely buy it, because I feel like I haven't played a "true" (I.E for my own tastes) FPS game ever since Shadow of Chernobyl came out around four years ago (I liked Borderlands, I must say, but I preferred the STALKER series overall).

Additionally, I wonder... in that video we can see lots of abandoned buildings as the player rotates the camera around, for instance, pausing at 0:31 seconds, we can see all those residential buildings, crushed, probably crumbling stuff (and with reason), all decaying and surely very dangerous to even approach... but is it? What I'm wondering is, first, can we ENTER those buildings? Or are they just there and having their entrances blocked by a mess of debris like in Fallout 3? And, not only that, but are the structures actually dangerous? Will there be falling debris as you explore them (IF you can explore them), will there be any hazardous environments to worry about outside of the actual NPCs like the mutants and various gang members around?

Time will tell, sure. But to be honest I won't hold my breath for too much. In the end however I think it looks good, most likely the best FPS to come in years, I am confident of that, but really... the story? A meteor hits the Earth, you're the sole survivor in your own "Arc" (I.E Vault), you get out and oh... it's a post-apocalyptic world, and yes of course that means mutants then makes sense, probably zombies, too. I like id Software, I really do (no sarcasm), but they've never really got into the whole "we can make good stories in our games" business.

Is something wrong? Do you work for id or something? I have an opinion on a single trailer of a single game and that means I hate every single game that ever was or ever will be? I'm sorry for having an opinion. God forbid I don't get a raging boner over every FPS that comes out.

Looks boring. That's my opinion. Another brown shooter... whoopdedoo. The fact that you're impressed by this just proves what a rut this industry is in, and that gamers are just fine with it for whatever reason.

I love both of those games, and it seems apt. if this gets the story and atmosphere elements of fallout, with a little bit of the RPG stuff (Fallout gets bogged down in that-quests and far too many options for me to ever make a decision. still like it, though), and the action and loot of Borderlands, then this would be a good thing for me.

yeah, very generic, but they create a great atmosphere, it seems, if that is your type of atmosphere.

If this is very much an FPS, fully sandbox with good action and decent RPG elements (better than the ME games, that is), then I think they do have something going on here. As generic as it sounds, if done well with good dialogue and compelling story elements, it could be a real gem.

Generic is never really an issue unless it fails to deliver anything engaging--a reason to continue on to the next beat.
